Transfer case upgrade

Post by 67nukeford »

I have the NP435 and single speed transfer case in my 67 4x4. Is there a 2 speed transfer case I can upgrade to? I was going to go to a 5 speed, but can't find one that will adapt to my 390 without costing a fortune. So, I'll stick with the NP435 (and maybe have it regeared, if possible), but I'd like to get a 2 speed transfer case. Is there one available for the NP435?

Thanks!

I think the Dana 20 out of an early Bronco with an adapter will work. Do a search in this forum and see what pops up. It's been done.

You could also get a NP435 with a 205 gear drive out of a '76-'79.
You'll need the tranny because yours is a 2wd with a adapter.
The D20 would be a good choice and it even has a lower ratio, but it might cost more to covert.?

Thanks cep, I think that will be the direction I go. I need to find a donor for the power steering anyway, now if I could just find a truck with a good tranny and transfer case to donate with it!

Divorced or married?

Definitely skip the Dana 24 (piece of crap) and head straight for the NP205, which is available in either version.

Married. I've heard that about the dana also, so I'll stick with the 250.

Dana 24, I just rebuilt mine at 750,000 miles, I have nothing bad to say about a 24, but they are getting hard to find. However if you have over 450 hp it would be worth finding a NP205.MY truck has a stout 390 and lives in 4WD . Oh well free advice...... Good luck

Go with what this guy said mid to late 70's 4 speed and 205 case, but you will have to lengthen the front drive shaft or get the donor one and shorten the rear shaft or get the donor one to. I cant remember if you have to modify the cross member. I am in the prosess of doing this same thing on my 71 f100 shorty.
