Re: My 72 f100 project( UPDATE 10-8-09 )
The truck in the background is my brother's 48 chevy 1 ton, it's in realy good shape, mostly original, he dosen't let me drive it . I will be doing the bed liner myself. I meant to say hurculiner, not rhinoliner. Napa has the kit on sale for $70 ,plus a $25 mai-in rebate, so I ordered 3 kits.I want it thicker than one coat. I thought about having it profesionally spayed, but it's too darn expensive. as for the cargo light, yes, I turned it into a 3rd brake light. I just sprayed the lens with some red paint. It worked fairly good, but I think eventualy I will get one of those red LED bulbs NPD sells and remove the paint from the lens. The paint I used was called Limco 2, which is a single stage acrylic. I spent probably about $500 on everything, primer, sealer, thinner, paint , and hardener. I probably wasted more than usual though having sprayed everything individually though, because I had to clean the gun more often, had leftover I couldn't realy save (beleve me I tried, It sets up even in a sealed jar) you get the idea. so if you are just painting the outside of the truck, all assembled you could do it for $300 easy. of course I also coated the backside of almost everything with POR-15, so that's another $150. but is's well worth the extra $$$ to not have to worry about rust for a while. And yeah, I feel like both of those guys right now and these guys

Thanks, yea I go through alot of primer, so I know how the feel of costly paint jobs. I just don't have the money to paint, and I don't want it to rust so I keep sanding and priming .

Re: My 72 f100 project( UPDATE 10-8-09 )
well, after spending the whole day sanding, welding, grinding, and dent filling, I managed to get the tailgate painted. now all I gotta do is get a can of black paint to do the hindges, supports, and latch. Hopefully I can have this thing on the road in the next week. gotta call around for a windshield though, I messed the seal up when I was trying to get the trim to seat into the seal, now the windshield is starting to fog badly, so I might as well get a new one and have it professionally installed too. the back window was easy, but keeping that trim in the windshield is a @#%$^!!! oh well, good learning experience.... dont try it again! I also got my Hurculiner today, so as soon as I get the tail gate on I can start that project. I'll post more pictures as I get farther along.

Man, that's cool! Someday I'm gonna do up a shortbed 2wd with a hopped up 300. I was halfway there when I bought my crew and sold it. The grass is always greener...

That is nice, love the idea of using the cargo light for a brake light.

Re: My 72 f100 project( UPDATE 10-8-09 )
Well, I got the tailgate on, put 5 coats of hurculiner on and finished up the wiring. I also started on the rear brake lines. I discovered that when I converted to disk brakes I forgot the get the 73 distribution block, so I ordered an inline adjustable proportion valve for the rear brakes. I will get the brakes finished up tomorrow, and if it's not raining get some pictures. I realy like the way the bed liner turned out, so much nicer than a drop in liner. I also need to replace one of the studs on the rear wheel, but I can't seem to get the drum off. The other side came off easy, but this one is rather stuck. is there any trick to getting it off? it appears it is rusted to the axle end.

Re: My 72 f100 project( UPDATE 10-8-09 )
I finaly got some pictures today. I also got her on the road today I need to get a calabration for the carburetor, its running a little rich in the mid range. I also need to try a different speedometer, this one is reading between 45-50 when I fairly certain I am doing 55ish. I will have to have someone follow me to be certain. I'll be getting an allignment monday, and a new windshield tuesday. I also need to try a different sending unit for my fuel guage, this one isn't working properly. other than that it handles beautifully...for a 38 year old truck. the brakes work top notch, the rear brakes don't lock up anymore now that I put a proportioning valve in the rear line. I still need a few little things, like tail light rings, and bed reflectors, but basicly it's done! Oh, I'm gonna need a radio too, the FM went out for some reason, and all I get is banjo pickin on AM. but that's on the back burner for now.

That's a big change. I think that the red LED for the third brake light will work great. Make sure and post some of those pics. As for banjo pickin that's better than nothing for now..

Thats an awesome job. I'd love to have a project turn out like that. The paint looks beautiful! How long did it take from start to finish?

Re: My 72 f100 project( UPDATE 10-16-09 ALMOST DONE)
It took me about 8 months from start to finish. I have been driving almost every day this week. it handles great and have not had any problems so far. the only thing that realy bugs me is that the vent windows leak water, but I can't see how it is getting through, so I need to fix that before it does any damage.it's hard to realy say how the fuel milage is, as the speedo and fuel guage don't read properly, but I beleve I'm getting between 12-15 mpg. other than those few little quirks it runs and drives great!19ford71 wrote:Thats an awesome job.
