My 67 Highboy plans and questions

Post by victimofwv »

I was looking at my highboy today and trying to make plans about what I am gonna do with the suspension. Currently both rear springs are busted, front springs look to be sagging, and th po added some steel plates under them to level the truck back up. It has the stock manual steering and enclosed knuckle front axle.
here's my plans:
Install a Skyjacker 2" suspension lift system that would give me all new springs
convert to power steering either by the method described here or by trying my luck finding a 78-79 box (i have found a complete 78 F250 for 500.00)
Would like to swap in a later open knuckle front end that would give me disc brakes.
Now for a question.
By installing a 2 inch suspension lift, how much room for tires will I have? Can I get 15-38 ground hawgs on it?
Is this 2 inch lif actually 2 inches more than the truck was stock, or will it merely bring the truck back to stock height. Since Highboys actually had 2 inches from the factory.

Here is another for 460 crew to answer. Talk to him about the exacts on the lifts.

I am sure the 2" inch lift will be 2 more inches higher then stock. What is 15-38? Is the 15 the rim size or tire width?
If it is rim size it will not work on an F250 and depending on what style closed knuckle you have 16" rims will not work. If you have a HD Dana 44 front axle you will need 16.5" rims or bigger.
38" tires will be tight but do able if you don't overload the truck or stuff the tires. You would be safer with 35" or 36" tires if you plan on trail reaming the truck.

Thanks for the heads up heep. The actual tire size I was referring to is 15/38X16.5 Ground Hawgs or Gumbo Mudders. Since I will have the body off I may add 3 inches of body lift anyway. If all goes as planned, I may sawp in a front axle from a 78 F250 HD If I can find enough people here to buy parts off the rest of the truck, since all I want is the front axle and steering box. My highboy also now has a body. Check Project updates for info on this, and see parts for sale for parts I am selling of the late model trucks.

Victim The 35-36's liek heep stated wwould be your best bet if your going to use the truck. 38's will most definately rub. I have the skyjacker 4in and 35's rub with pounding and thats also with their springs putting the front axle a little further forward compard to stock, the skyjackers actualy center the axle in the wheelwell a little better. On the rear 38's would give me only about 3in of clearance with 35's. I had a set of used springsb4 I added the skyjacker deal and they gave me 2in of lift and it wasn't enough for anything. IMHO you'd be better off if your doing the lift and paying the money out just splurge for the 4in while ur at it. If you are still interested in the body lifts I have a 3in Black Diamond kit that is new in the box. I'm not big on body lifts and don't really recommend them but I pick this one up at a good price. As side note by the back of the Skyjacker catalog a 2in lift you can fit 38's and a 4in you can fit 40's, Personaly I think their full of crap but hey, my luck maybe I got a set of bum springs.

Isn't the factory lift on a Hiboy in the form of the springs being over the axles? I dunno about the non-Hiboys (how the springs are set-up) but if this is true then you would definately get your 2 inch lift with the new springs.

Thanks for the info guys. 460crew, I might just go with the 4 inch set. My main problem is the busted rear springs right now. But I am going to have to wait on all this as I just got another truck for the body. So it may even be spring before I am tearing into the suspension :(

Im going 8-10" lift to put 37" tires on.. thinking the 4-6" with 35" seems to be the standard.

460crew: post some pictures when you get the link setup on

HAHA that post was in 05, I since traded out all the suspension stuff I had for the conversion for parts for my sandrail, crew is still sittin on leafs. After the rail is done I will prob get back to the trucks suspension. I might have pics of the 77 crew I sold my buddy with all the parts installed though in the next couple months.
