Re: mljjones67 PROJECT CUMMINS UPDATE(New Pics. 4/19/09)
They come out the top. Remove the rods to soak them and lube things well when you reassemble. Clean the rings grooves as best you can without removing them. Take the rings off and you might as well replace them, keeping track of all the ring pieces and where they go is a nightmare. Rings are $25+ a hole.
You might be opening a can of worms here just to clean piston tops to have them stay clean for 2 minutes after the engine fires for the first time. OE rings go a million miles in a stock VE 5.9 cummins with regular air filter and oil changes. The <200 HP sixes run at a very minimal loading compared to medium duty, marine and agricultural applications these engines were designed for.
Mike, if you're going to pull pistons do a complete teardown, hot tank and reassembly. The work you're considering doing is getting fairly excessive just to change a headgasket. IMHO, throw the engine in and enjoy it. Headgasket is a 2 hour job in the truck, timing cover's a pain, but not seriously difficult.
I just installed a 92 5.9 into my 89 F350 4x4. Took 2 days to get everything in there with an air compressor and F800 radiator/IC and driving again. I did nothing to the engine except remove the cold timing advance that wouldn't clear the air compressor and adjust the valves and it has 286K miles on it. Engine runs great and I'm glad I didn't do any other work to it. If it craps out I'll buy another for $500 and dump it in to replace it.

Re: mljjones67 PROJECT CUMMINS UPDATE(New Pics. 4/19/09)
Well I think I might go that route anyway. Just because I have it tore down that far anyway. Plus I already messed with pistons before I asked the question. Dumb I know!! I still need to replace the thrust bearing and all the gaskets. I probably need the IP looked at just to make sure its ok. I wonder how much a hot tank of the block and the pistons would run me? I really dont want to but I dont want the cylinder walls to scar up from the crap falling in there either. I guess well see. THANKS Dustin

Re: MLJJONES67 PROJECT CUMMINS
Not much to update. Just about have all the paint off of the f-600 instrument bezel. Man that paint is tough!! I will be doing the cummins valve covers next. I will get some pics later this week.

Re: MLJJONES67 PROJECT CUMMINS
Finally got the IP gear off and the IP off the case. Next the cam will be coming out so I can replace the broken gear case. Here is how I will be keeping the tappets in while the cam is out.

Re: MLJJONES67 PROJECT CUMMINS
Well its been way to long since I have been able to update this thread but today was a good day. I got some stuff done finally. First off I cut down the front cross member so I can get the cummins set in there and motor mounts made.
I also unwrapped the wiring for the emergency flasher so I could move it over to the drivers side of the dash. All the wires reached back over to the dash except one.(Blue and White) I have a spare harness out of the other truck I salvaged so I took enough of the same wire out of that harness to make the one in the other one work.
It will go in this empty spot.
Here the f-600 gauge panel trial fitted. I had to notch the right side so it would fit around the Ranger chrome dash trim.
I had an idea for the holes in the dash where the dash pad mounted to it. I am going to find some white LED's to fill the holes and wire it into the dome lights. I want it to be not very noticeable.

Re: MLJJONES67 PROJECT CUMMINS
That's a good idea!!! On a "complete" engine we always used wooden dowels. Tap them in with a hammer, pulled up on the dowel and tapet, then held the two dowels at each piston together with rubber bands. Also had a cool thing set up for replacing tappets on a near complete engine.mljjones67 wrote:Finally got the IP gear off and the IP off the case. Cool just used to seeing it next to the ignition.

Re: MLJJONES67 PROJECT CUMMINS
Yeah I moved it so I could put the emergency lights close to the head lights. The wipers switch is out of a 80's ford intermittent.
