460 cooling questions
Those of you running a 460, what radiator did you use? I am looking at using a 3 core out of a dent. Would the fan shroud for the 460 in a dent, work with the dent side radiator mounted in a bump?

yes the fan shroud from a dentside should fit perfectly on the 460 radiator. i think the 460 radiator is a 4 row though. i would have to look that up to be sure.

Looking it up on NPD shows a 3 core?

Re: 460 cooling questions
it could be. i only said i think . not i know. anyway the fan shrounds should fit because they are the same width in a dentside as a fe radiator. the widths are around 26 1/2 at the core.

Call a radiator shop and tell them you have a tow truck. I was able to get a 4 row heavy duty radiator for $20 more than the standard 3 core. just a thought. Tom

Re: 460 cooling questions
I am still running the 302 radiator in my 71 F100- 460/c6. I replaced it with a stock one about 10 years ago so it's not original. It is a 3 row.
I don't know if my truck had some kind of tow package or what but I have noticed it is a larger radiator than I have seen on some other 302 trucks. My dad bought my truck new so I know for a fact it was never swapped before I did it.
Cools my 460 fine though. 180* no matter what kind of driving I do or outside temp.
It is a very mild 77 model 460 though so low compression with just a RV type cam, headers, Performer intake and 600 Holley.

Re: 460 cooling questions
cdeal. did you have to change the size of the radiator hose when you put the 460 in? most of the radiators are the same or similar size as far as core size. but not all of them. the mani difference is the upper hose nipple on the radiator. the 302 should have had a smaller radiator nipple than say the fe engine would have had. i do not know what size nipple the 460 radiator woudl have had. i have never seen one. but since the 460 is a dentside era engine in our size trucks. the radiator hose size on the engine could have been made smaller to use a 302 sized radiator hose. i do not know this part so this is why i am asking about the radiator hose size you used.

Re: 460 cooling questions
An FE Super Cooling option radiator works well. Minor core support mod to attach is all that's needed.

Re: 460 cooling questions
I didn't change it when I went to the 460 but come to think of it when I bought the new rad. the upper hose nipple was the wrong size to fit the 302. So I guess it was the right size when I went to the 460. There was a 351w in there between the 2 also. Last time I changed the hoses I just took my old one and walked up and down the hoses at the parts store until I found the right one.

Re: 460 cooling questions
I just bought an all aluminum rad.from Genesis auto parts,I went to a 2 elect.fan set up,that I pieced together myself, and saved a couple hundred$$$,taking that fan and clutch off the 4.9-300 made less drag on the sixer, and its a little more throttle responsive, should of done it long ago,it works great!when you pop the hood and see that aluminum rad.with those neat tig welds it looks good,I got the idea from a hot rod magazine.right now,my next mod will be a DUI distributor, and a spark box.I cant wait.
