it engine oil sludge. if its only in the one place that is better than being in the whole engine. i dont know exactly why its in one certain spot. keepign the oil changed with good oil will keep it from makign the whole engine worse.

Can you post some better pictures? Maybe some showing a larger area of the head?

It looks suspiciously like the valve train in that engine is awful dry!!

well the rest seems cleaner than the first picture implied. there does seem to be something going on there.

Okay.

After looking at some better pictures, everything looks right. It just didn't look like there was any oil upstairs in the first photos.

The "carbon" that you're worried about is just standard equipment. That's in the area of the exhaust crossover ports. There are two ports, one on the intake side of each head, that are connected through the intake. This allows hot exhaust gases to flow through the intake manifold and warm up the intake air when the engine is cold. On some engines, there is a "heat riser" valve that partially (almost totally) blocks the exhaust on one side until the engine gets up to normal operating temperature. The exhaust going through the intake side of the head heats up that area of the head and causes any oil that is present to "caramelize" and eventually turn to a hard carbon deposit.

The heads have five ports on the intake side (not including the water ports). These ports are the second from the front on the passenger side and second from the rear on the driver's side.

Don't worry about it, we've all got it!!!

LEAVE IT ALONE!!!

It's not hurting anything the way it is. It will reappear again after several thousand more miles.

As long as it's all bonded together, it won't go anywhere.

Break it loose, it will go into the lifter valley and eventually into the oil pan.

Once it gets into the pan, those hard crystals can break apart and get into your oil pump.

Again, it's not hurting ANYTHING where it is. Get it into the oil pan, and you risk losing an engine!!!
