I just got my truck running after a 4 years of wrenching when I could find the time (stage I complete—it runs and drives). I have replaced the 2bbl carb with a rebuilt unit and the engine runs well, but I have noticed that it seems to want to be choked a small amount, otherwise it will want to bog down when I hit the gas—even when it’s warmed up. It pumps out a lot of smelly stuff as a result, and I’ve had problems restarting it after a long drive—it floods. I’m guessing there’s some adjustment that I need to make—i.e. adjusting the lean mixture screw? Also, in summer weather driving, I’m assuming the choke flap should stay straight up (no choke) even first thing in the morning—correct? The carb has a manual choke, which I would like to upgrade to electric. Anyone have a spare laying around that they’d like to sell?
Thanks,
Greg

Re: 360 Choke Issue
i choke mine in the mornings i always have had to. it does sound out of adjustment. are you sure it is flooding after long drives? or is it boiling the fuel out of the carb? the flooding could be something from the old lines or something out of the tank that came up and caught in the needle and seat of the float. or if its boiling the fuel out casued by heat soak. a phelonic spacer might need to be in there to keep the heat away fromt he carb. do you have a water passage spacer under the carb now? is it hooked up if you have one? i might have a extra electric choke i would have to look to make sure.

Re: 360 Choke Issue
There is a spacer under the carb. I installed new heater hoses too it, so I know there's coolant running through. I had the fuel tank cleaned and sealed and installed a new sender and fuel line, new fuel pump, etc. I don't know that it is flooding, but I know I have flooded it while trying to get it started (this has happened only once). I've found in the morning if I pump the pedal 2-3 times, then turn the key it fires right up (w/o choke). Should I do that after it's warm too?

Re: 360 Choke Issue
the spacer under the carb with the water going through it was designed to keep the carb warm. to keep the carb from icing over. since you live up north you will want to keep that on there for the winter time. it may just need a fianl adjustment then. usually when you get a new carb it isnt completely adjusted to your enigne. all i can tell you about adjusting it is to turn both screws in and count the turns. then turn them out to 1 1/2 turns and then start the truck. then adjust as needed to get it running where you want it to run at. if it runs badly and you cant get it set. turn the screws back to where you found them at before you started. atleast it will run where it was set at.

Re: 360 Choke Issue
Your problem is not the spacer. I had the same problem. There is a gasket underneath the venturi that was installed upside down. Flip it over and the "flooding" will stop. As for the other problem, it is running lean, try raising the float level and see if that helps. If not, remove the jets and drill them out 1 drill bit size bigger (very very small).

Re: 360 Choke Issue
Sounds VERY much like there may be an issue with the accelerator pump.

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???
