Problems Running
Ok so we put a new crank kit into a 351w. We got a rebuilt holley, the engine would sputter gas out the butterfly. We sent the carb back, they said they fixed it. It still sputters. So we take it to my mechanic, a great guy, I know alot of stuff and he does too. They say well one thing is all your cylinders arent firing. We found that a spark plug was burnt in 2. We replace that, and he also said it sounds like one of your rocker arms is too tight, so we pulled the valve cover but it seemed not to be tight. Any ideas, we cant figure it out.

just guessing. but could it be the compression is coming back up throught the intake valves for some reason or another? maybe incorrect timing chain placement or a stuck valve? im just guessing.

Ok question, So after we put the dizzy back in after taking it out after installing the crank, we timed it by the teeth. And when we ran it, it was 360 degrees out of time? What does that tell you? And there was a bit of slop in the chain, how much is actually suppose to be in there?

180 out is what you mean. and that means the dist is half way aroudn where it suppose to be at. it shouldnt have started at 180 out.

Sounds more like it was 180 off..
Did you determine that Cyl #1 was in firing position? "IE: TDC

You can be 180 degrees off.. The timing mark will line up, but
#1 won't be at TDC. You can verify either by pulling the plug
and watching the piston, or you can tell by the rockers and
valves if looking up top.. It's easier to just yank a plug. :/

Yea we did not so thats a duh, we had the bug pointed at #1 but we didn't check the pistons. Ok thats one thing, and how much slop should be in that chain?

Which would mean we would have to pull the chain and dizzy, and crank till 1 is up and 8 is down right? Have the markers lined up, and drop the diz with the bug towards #1 plug?
If it's that, then that would effect one of my pistons with the exhaust and intake valves not opening in correct time? Which would be like my mechanic said if my rocker arm was too tight right? Then If I redo that, then it should fix right?

leave the chain in . its ok as long as the gears were lined up with the dots lining up on the timing gears. just pull the dist out and spint he rotor around half way and put it back in. or you could move the spark plug wire half way around the dist to make it correct. i thin kthat might get the thing going correctly. and then worry abotu the rocker too tight just before you start it agin. that should solve everything.

Guess what fordman, you were right again. I had my mechanic look at it, they spent cpl hours on it. They ran compression tests, couldn't find anything. They said, it's your timing chain. They didn't even charge me for the hours on it. And they said your crank was probably a little tight when you put it in, and your timing chain had a little slack. So they said you most likely jumped a couple teeth. But what was happening the intake and exhaust valves werent opening all the way causing gas to spill back out. But you were right, they said go with a double roller timing chain from a 5.0 mustang. We got it, hopefully it works, putting it in tommorow. Thanks fordman.

actually i didnt think it was the chain. i thought it may have been the dist in backwards. yo umay have been refering to my guess abotu the valves not opening all the way . hey i was just guessing on that one. if it were in frotn of me i would have been scratching my head trying to figure it out myself.

Well regardless you made me think it was the timing chain too. I put it in today, it idled wonderfully. The first drive we had to adjust some things, the second one went better no backfiring, and it sped up. I think were still out of adjustment on our carb and dizzy, because It doesn't like speed up quick. It gradually goes up. But it did fix the main problem, the rest is just tinkering.
