Ok, so this is slightly off topic, but since I also have a 390 in my bump I thought I could sneak it in here!
My 62 Thunderbird with a stock 390 has been overheating on slow cruises (ie 5mph for an hour). I've decided to recore the radiator, hopefully with a higher performance build, replace the weak fan clutch, put in a high flow t-stat and, while I'm at it, swap out the water pump. I'm considering putting in a high flow water pump in, but I don't want it to cool it too much on a typical higher speed cruise. I've looked at the ones that flow higher at low speeds and normal at higher engine RPMs, but they don't make them for the earlier application with a generator, like my bird.
Anyone know if there are drawbacks to using a higher flow water pump on a street car? I'm guessing with a 180 degree t-stat that should restrict it from getting too cool, is that right?

high flow water pump on my FE?
Timothy
It's for my twin boys, sure they're only 3 right now, but it's all for them! Well, and my twin girls. They're not even 1 yet, but when they are I'll have a pit crew!

Re: high flow water pump on my FE?
I don't think you will see much cooling gains with the high flow water pump.
Once you get the new rad and fan clutch in place I think you will be just fine... The old rule of thumb is Hot at slow speeds = air flow issues, hot at high speeds = water flow issues.

Re: high flow water pump on my FE?
Thanks eric - kinda my thought too. But I'm trying to go ahead and do everything to help. I live at 8,000 feet, and the thin air doesn't do as well cooling in the first place, so I'm hoping that increasing water flow will help.

Tim,
If you are near Farmington I happen to know a top notch ford mechanic that may be able to offer relevant advice.
Good luck with bot sets of twins... WOW.
I know I couldn't handle it..
