428 crank in 390 Need info.

Post by brents 67 »

I recently got offered a 428 crank to put in my 390 . I need some info on the pros and cons of this. And tips on what to do or not do if I go this route.

I believe the 428 crankshaft is externally balanced where as the 390 is internally balanced so you will have to address that. A 390 with a 428 crank, is that basically a 406 or a 410 cubic FE?

Actually I was doing calculations to this effect last night and a 406 is a 428 block with a 390s 3.78" stroke Crank and a 410 is a 390 with a 428s 3.98" stroke Crank so you would have to get the right Pistons BUT a 410 is a BAD ASS engine and would definitely be worth it

You'll need the externally balanced flywheel and harmonic balancer if going with the 428 crank.

the 428 crank can and should be internally balanced same as the 390 crank when used to make a 410.
and if your replacing pistons this should be done reguardless. It will cost a little more than std. balanceing because they will need to use heavy metal(mallory) to get enough weight.

Go for the crank swap!!! You will need to adress the flywheel balancing issue. The harmonic balancer is the same as any balancer on a 390, 360, 428, 352, etc. They are all neutrally balanced. You can either get a externally balanced flywheel (autozone has them available for around $100) or get the crank balanced. If you can find someone to balance the crank go that route but I know that many shops don't like to do that on the 428's so they might suggest the off-set flywheel.
