429 casting numbers

Post by dolinick »

I got the numbers off the engine, intake, heads, and even the water pump. Someone called about buying the engine and asked for these. How do I decode them?

d6ve aa on the water pump

dive 8015 aa 6 on the block (passenger side)

d2ve-aa on the driver side head (upside down)
d2ve aa on the passenger side head

2 dove-9425b on the intake manifold
f4 ih27 (on a tag)
87541(in a circle shaped tag)

s 93 on the top of transmission bellhousing and
70060 a2 on the side of the tail of the drivers side of the transmission

also on the intake it says "firing order 15426378" and
on the tag on the valve cover just says emmission info and 429 CID 10' BTDC...
The rest of the tag with idle rpm and such is torn off.

I have this 429 for sale or trade. I was planning on getting my '71 running again but may simply replace the entire truck with another running project instead...
my truck has a 360 block and 3 speed transmission. I also have another automatic transmission and the old 360 with a cracked block laying around somewhere.

1971 type block, internally balanced. In '79 blocks changed and had longer cylinder walls and were externally balanced. All of the 429/460 blocks after '71 were D1VE blocks. I believe there was a D5 block, though :hmm:
The D2VE heads are not worth their weight in scrap iron. You want C8, C9 or D0VE cylinder heads.
Get a 460 crank and pistons to immediately increase cubic inch, the bore is the same. Make sure you get a pre-'79 crank, though. The engine may already be a 460 with 429 valve covers (based on the valve cover tag info). Get the number off of the crank to be sure. 4U crank is a 429, 2Y crank is a 460, 3Y crank is an externally balanced 460

thanks for the info. I won't be rebuilding this engine. I need to sell it to support my F100 habit. I may join the '67 stepside club soon...
