the paint on the bottom spring cup and push rods show why you should put the valve cover on before painting the engine and the valve cover bolts.

i have posted more info and pics on the project forum. so far i'm lead to believe the problem was a bad gasket.

so guys i have a question with all this , before i started to use the car again it was sitting in the yard for 8 months do u think probably the valve guides got dry and they r not working properly?
and when i changed the water pump i grab the house and stick it into one of the holes of the water passage besides having rust and mineral build up a dark chokolate like color on the water start to come out and i kept the hose in for a while and kept comming out. next thing i did i drain the oil out of the engine to check for signs of water on the oil but i didnt see any.
is that normal or i got something going on?
