ok so i have a 272 y block with a 2 bbl manual chock carb motor craft i was thinking about putting a 4 bbl in there but in order to do that i need to change my manifold and all the other stuff a friend of mine told me they sell adapters for the 4bbl so i can keep my stock manifold what do you guys recommend i do put the adapter or put a new manifold

Get a manifold . Air flow will not be good , unless you just want it for show and tell its a bad investment I think . I have an adapter like that I dont use anymore, along with many others , they are not as good as a manifold

A 272 is too small to accomodate a 4 barrel especially any newer Holley or Motor Craft. The only 272 I have ever seen with a 4 barrel was in a '56 Mercury Monarch. They listed the engine as a 256 CI but it was definately a 272. They had what we called a "2 story Holley" p/n ECZ 9510 H or LIST 1161 2. The intake casting number was EZY-9423-D and has small ports. The Holley carb has 2 x 1 1/4 inch primary butterflies and 2 x 1 1/4 inch vacuum secondaries. The base bolts measure 3 3/34 x 3 3/4 inches. The 312 CI, which definately would accomodate a 4 barrel, you could get with 2 different heavy breathing 4 barrel intakes for the same 2 story Holley and they cast as ECZ-9426-A and ECZ-9425-A.

Then there is the really big 312 intake for a 600 CFM+ and it cast's as ECZ-9425-B with a 5 5/8 x 5 1/8 inch bolt pattern. I'm guessing the cast number found on the rear of the carb for your 2 barrel is ECG-9425-H.

The 292 is the middle version of the "Y" block series of Ford engines and was very popular, probably more so than the 272 or 312. Is your engine dual exhaust or does it have the cross over pipe? Does it have an external crankcase breather or does it have a PCV recovery system? I would find a good tuned Motor Craft 2 barrel and run that. These casting numbers are all from intakes I own. I also have a 2 barrel intake for a 2 barrel Stromberg from a 239 flathead V8 kicking around here someplace as well. I have a good running 272 in my '34 Ford truck c/w Ford O Matic and a complete '56 Thunderbird 312 on a stand. :fr:

I am afraid I have to disagree with the post above as it is not correct. The quick explanation is a 272 will run much nicer with a 4 barrel than with a 2 barrel. It was more expensive and not common when these engines were new so they did not use them often but the 4 barrel is definitely better and engine size has nothing to do with how many barrels a carb has (hey, a Honda 750CC can have a 4 barrel right? Also note that the 260 small block Ford loves a 4 barrel and made Shelby a rich man when he put them in cars!). The 4 barrel is a more complicated part which is one of the reasons some people are not comfortable with them. An adapter will not help improve anything as you do need a manifold that is fitted to the carb to get the right air flow characteristics. A poor fit caused loss of fuel from suspension, restrictions etc... You also really want to avoid the old teapot carbs unless you are going for a look rather than performance. They are old technology that did not work well originally. Use and ECZ or aftermarket intake and get a small 4 barrel carb from Holley (Carter will work too but small ones are not common) and you will be very happy. A stock Ford service carb like a D0PF-9510-U is an ideal 450 CFM carb that is just the right size for a 272 or 292. Ed

I agree with scrapping the 4V to 2V adapter. You need the airflow. Without the airflow, you will not benefit from that 4V carb. Some guys say, "This works way better than my old 2V..." but it's because their 2V needed a rebuild. Running a 4V on a 2V manifold will not give you the airflow you need to benefit from the 4V. You will essentially have a "rich" 2V when you're at full throttle. A good 2V is a better bet if you don't want to spend the money on a 4V manifold.

The comment made about the smaller engine (272) not liking the 4V, it is probably because someone put too large of a carburetor on a small engine. You can't put a 750CFM on a 272 and expect it to haulass. You have to get a carb that will not over carburate your engine.Big Ed is right on the CFM. Besides, the "Y" blocks aren't really hot rods anyway.

what if i wanted to leave the 2bbl but a better carb the one i have has a little problem i could only give it so much gas so i feel like its not getting all the gas i can give it should i just look for a 2 bbl with out a manual choke i was gunna go to a carb shop near my house n see what they tell me

Get a rebuild kit for your carb. They're usually around $20 or so. Have your carb cleaned real good, then put the rebuild kit in it.
If it doesn't help, your not out that much. If it works and the carb runs good, you've saved all that money you were going to spend for a new carb or carb/manifold. :thup:

i had the carb rebuilt about 1 month ago but they didnt take out the govenor it had so it only lets me put like 1 inch worth of gas like when i press on the gas if you look at the carb the throttle only moves about an inch can i take it out my self or should i just go to a carb shop n see if there is something they can do
