what is this?
While looking at the linkage on my grandfathers 72 i saw this tube coming from what looks like the tranny up to the carb. can someone tell me what it is and what it does?

If you are talking about the bar going to the throttle linkage, that's the tranny kickdown. That's what tells the tranny to go into passing gear when the gas pedal is pushed to a certain point. The only other thing going to the tranny should be the vacuum hose that runs to the modulator valve. I understand that this has something to do with the shift from 1st to 2nd, but others can be more specific.

You can adjust some vacuum modulators to make the gears shift at different points, sooner or later shifts. Not all modulators are adjustable though. You would have to pull the vacuum hose and see if there is an adjustment screw inside
