Ok, we took all the hoses, etc off of the 360 in my BIL's 71 f100 today, painted the engine and painted the bay. Hooked everything back up, and it fires, and runs, but misfires occassionally. (At least I assume it is, it's a slight popping coming from the exhaust intermittently. i checked everything, seems to be alright, and hooked up as it should, we didn't change anything, and suddenly it's misfiring.
We took it for a 2 minute drive, and it acted like it didn't want to shift to 2nd or 3rd, (in fact, I don't think it did at all)
What are you first recommendations I should check. What things are the most likely, in what order? Thanks, fellas.

Re: MISFIRE!!!
Sounds like a possible vacuum leak, especially with the trans no-shift.

Thats what I was suspecting too. I think I might have an idea of the problem. Thanks for the heads up, I'll post tomorrow when I have checked more into it.

Did you double check your firing order?
Did you get paint on the spark plugs where the wires fit on?

Re: MISFIRE!!!
i would say vacuum leak also. maybe the hose goign to the modlulator split when you put it back on. or it is loose and needs a new hose.

Re: MISFIRE!!!
Get some B12 carb cleaner or starting fluid and with the engine at idle, spray it slowly around until the vacume leak sucks in some and stumbles or stutters. The engine will rev up a little with the starting fluid. That will help you locate the leak.

Re: MISFIRE!!!
Had two cracks in one of the vacuum hoses. Thanks for the help, guys, everything's fixed now.
Also, this things VIN shows it as a 390, but the air cleaner said 360. Where can I find a casting number or something to tell me which one it is?

Re: MISFIRE!!!
it doesnt have one. you have to measure the stroke. 3.78 is a 390 and 3.50 is a 360
