either drop the pan or keep fishing.
What goes down must come up. :hmm: sounds funny that way...

lol nope dont remember that...guess im too young lol...but anyways i dont think i can fish it out, i tried for hours with several different magnets and tools...no luck...now im thinking, is it possible/ok to leave the shaft in the oil pan and just buy and drop another in until i have a reason to drop my pan?? i dont want to lose all my break in oil and stuff...this truck is not gonna be driven for months anyways...im just restoring it one section at a time so it will prolly only run for a couple hours a week maybe until the eng/trans/suspension/etc are reliable enough to daily drive

is it all the way down into the pan? or is it caught up where you can see it and mayeb goign to hurt something if the enigne turns over and starts? if it is all the way in the pan you could do that.

I've had great success with the RTV on a stick method....if you can get to the end of it. It has to sit long enough for the RTV to set up though so, if you're in a hurry....

I think I saw a chimp use that method to get at termites on Wild Kingdom...

I also learned that RTV in the pump drive socket to hold the rod in once you get it out will keep it from dropping out again.

Or buy a chimp and keep him around just in case.

I have used a piece of paper around the end of the driveshaft and then the driveshaft stuck into a 1/4" drive socket (for tightness) and had success, it's just a little hard to get the socket off of the driveshaft once you get it in.

Like I said, I rtv'd mine in the drive socket of the distributor. I've had it in and out a dozen times since and have had no problem.

Do it the day before you install it..just make sure it stays relatively strait while it dries. I also beveled the edge of the rod just a bit to help it align with the socket in the oil pump. That way it wants to find the hole without all that pokin and wigglin.

heh.
