Truck did great, we spent most the time learning how to drift because we will need to know how when were reacing in not too long. We could really feel the tires grabbing the dirt better with the new tires and the heavy fuel cell back there. Nothing broke, just a little flaw when i was turning the truck around, hit the gas and it stalled. And when it stalls and its hot, you have to usually wait 10 minutes for the engine to cool down.
I also ordered 80 more feet of 2" DOM! cab cage and bed cage should be done soon... i can't wait!

Re: 1971 f250 DESERT truck- 6/6 update
perhaps for racing you may want an adjustable timing setup like in race cars they start with normal timing and then get advanced for the race. or atleast they used to.
i think they have the dizz hooked to some cables like choke cables but one to move it retarded and one to go to racing setting. of course they are a diff bread so this might not work on a stock(ish) engine.
or maybe just adjust the carb for race day, or have a carb set for race and swap em out?

Hey 1971Ford,
I'm guessing you've already seen this:
http://flared-fenders.com/index.html
But I hadn't read about it on here. I was surprised to see such a specialized item for a bump! Others must build similar rigs to yours.

Re: 1971 f250 DESERT truck- 6/6 update
yep ive got all the fiberglass makers saved, i want to get fiberglass fenders and hood eventually.
And bumpsides are very common for prerunners, i have a huuggee collection of pictures of every bump prerunner i have seen on the offroad forums. I need to count how many prerunner bumps total. They are simply and the twin-i-beam makes it easy for a build.

Re: 1971 f250 DESERT truck- 6/6 update
those tires make the truck look perfect, are you going to do some more fender trimming or lift it a little bit more? it looks like there would be some rubbing when bottoming out. other than that the truck looks like one bad mofo.

Re: 1971 f250 DESERT truck- 6/6 update
ive been thinking about that, aramil.
There is a desert race in a few days less than 3 months from now, its a 300 mile desert race in nevada and i am going to try to get the truck race-legal and arrange things so we can "race". A part of the reason why i want to get in this last desert race of the season so bad is because i want to see what its like racing on the stock suspension. If it is unbearable then 16" coilovers and Deaver leaf packs here we come.
But if it isn't all that bad, then i will just swap in some ~4" lift coils in the front, i beam drop brackets, basic longer shocks, and extended radius arms... and small blocks in the rear to give the tires more room.
We shall see if my dad and i get into this 300 miler. the truck should be ready, but its the other things that have me worried (getting it there and back, dads tahoe being able to tow it easily or not, we have no dump cans and those are $120 each, we would have very little of pit crews, not many spare tires, etc.) but heck just to get onto the course and make it 1/10 of the way would be fun

Re: 1971 f250 DESERT truck- 6/6 update
well I painted the fuel cell straps black so they look purty.
But more importantly we plasma cut the front of the bed off and fit the main hoop in place after notching the bed floor. Then we got 2 holes cut for the side tubes to connect to the top of the main hoop corners but when we went to do the holes on the interior pieces of metal, the drill decided to die. RIP drill
Which sucks because we dont have the money for a new drill so the project goes no where until we get a drill
oh and i havent shown you guys this either, i cross braced the whole main hoop!
Think it will be strong enough? It will be welded solid soon
yes i retacked the upright piece that is slightly slanted to the left in this pic.
This is where the spares will be. We will ahve a tube coming from the bedcage making a bucket for the spares to strap to.
Look closely and you will see the front of the bed is cut out its hard to see because of the white/blue paint on the cab
starting to look like a race truck!
new parts!
switches, dust light, gauges, idiot lights, wiring
