New Engine

Post by 70 Sleeper »

I have a 70 with a 240 and I want to switch to a V8. I have located a 360 and a tranny and a 460 for the exact same price. I would like some insight on what you guys would do here. I am 27 and I am building my first truck.

Thanks

A 360 would be nice because it's less of a headache to get it to fit into our trucks. A 460 would be awesome for the power if you're up for the job. I've never stuffed a 460 in a bump but you would need the engine perches from a 460 Ford truck from a '73-'79 plus I believe there is some sort of issue with clearing the radiator. I know a few people have put a 460 in their bumps around here so hopefully they'll chime in. A 360 is nice because they came originally in these trucks and you would need the engine perches for a 352, 360, or 390 truck but wouldn't have to worry about any other clearance issue. So all said and done I would say the 360 since it's your first time plus it will give you lots of power but go for the 460 if you're up for a bit of a project.

Welcome to the site from Oklahoma!! :wel: :fr:

So the 360 comes with a transmission & the 460 doesn't. Correct?? If the 460 dont come with a tranny, figure in extra cost & time to locate a transmission. As well as the different drive shafts for the different transmissions.

It all depends on what you want. Is it going to be a street machine or just a nice daily driver with a little pep?

I have never been a fan of dropping a 385 series motor in a bump, but thats just me. Call me crazy, dumb, whatever. To me its like putting a FE in a 80's era Ford truck. It just doesn't belong there.

My vote (at this time) is for the 360.

Good luck!!

get the 360 and trans combo. it is a easyier engine to mess with and it has the trans with it. the 460 will take a different trans than the 6 cyl and the 360.

Thanks for the info guys. The truck is just a project, not a daily driver. I am calling about both engines today, so hopefully I can make a decision. What is the average price for these two engines in running condition? I think both are pretty good deals. I can get the 360/tranny for $300.00 or the 460 for $400.00

That sounds like pretty good prices to me. A 360 core at the junk yard is going to be $150 so I'd go for it!

The FE perches are the same as the 6 cylinder perches. You just need to move them to the rear set of holes.
Side oiler FE, see if you can catch me!!!
