why is shift lever moving upon acceleration?

Post by tchrincali »

I have a 67 250 Camper Special. The transmission was rebuilt, the tranny mounts replaced. The engine mounts were replaced as well. You see, I volunteered to pull a stump for my brother a while back... Anyway, the above repairs have been made, but the shift lever moves clockwise when I accelerate from a stop. A muffled clunk/thump accompanies this movement. Is there an explanation I'm missing? Thanks for any input.

Ok, here's more info. Didn't think to provide it first time. 352, automatic, column shift. Let me know if I can provide any more.

Was mounts replaced before or after pulling stump? If it was before you could have broken them again when pulling the stump if it was in a bind and you really torqued up the engine.

The worst thing would be a broken frame rail but that's probably not it. I suspect that one of your motor mount bolts has come loose. Next in line of probability would be a loose or broken trans mount or trans mounting cross member. It will turn out to be something simple.

I agree with sgs...think of it this way. Since the shifter is connected to the trans thru a series of hard rods and linkages.......the movement has to be initiated by the trans moving somewhat under torque. You could maybe use a prybar and a friends eyes to spot the weak link. Try shifting the trans up and down at the mount or side to side. Check the engine mount bolts and trans mount bolts for a shiny bare metal pattern under them that might indicate a loose connection.

if the muffler clunks when this happens it is a broken motor mount. the rubber is torn. open the hood and hit the gas and watch the enigne hop up when someone hits the gas.
