carb adjusted, now engine stalling

Post by RedAhtamn »

Hello all,

heres the deal, the engine was not starting all that easily so I decided to adjust the carb. I have a 390 with the motorcraft carb. I made sure the truck was warmed up and ready to go. I adjusted both front screws and the idle screw until the engine was running well. When I turned the truck off to button everything up it started sputtering and stalling. it smells as though it is running extremely rich now and I have re adjusted multiple times with no luck. Any ideas?

have you checked your dwell, and timing before adjusting the carb?

yes, it all appeared ok. the truck fires right up now, it never was able to start that well; however, now when I shut the key off the engine still clunks and sounds horrible. so maybe its out of timing now. I am almost suspecting an air leak somewhere so I am going to try and check that.

Did you set the mixture screws with a vacuum gauge or by best idle. Is the engine "diesling" when you shut is down,..running on. That's usually a sign of your idle is too high or too rich. Give us a little more back ground on what lead up to the stalling. Change fuel filter? Fuel pressure?
