My Block

Post by 19FORD67 »

Ok I measured the stroke on my motor, it's 3.50. Since my VIN plate says 352 it's probably safe to say I have a 352.?
Any other thoughts on this?

352 and 360 both have a 3 1/2" stroke.

how greasy does the outside of the eninge look? does it look as if its ever been replaced? if it doesn't look like it then its probably a 352. one way to tell with out removing the head is to check the crank to see which crank it has init. the 352 has a square notch and a half moon shape. the 360 i think only has the half moon shape. the 390 only has the square notch i think it is.

352 would be an original engine for 1967. Last year they were made.

Crank is the same for 352 and 360. Bore is 4.00 on 352, 4.05 on 360.

Pretty much the same engine, I doubt you could tell a difference with a compression test. There is a casting number on the passenger side front just below the head. May be able to confirm by deciphering this number but I'm afraid it would be the same as a 360, C6ME

What I meant to say is,..if it is not C6ME then it could possibly be a reman 360....???

At the end of the day it really doesn't matter. At this point i would personally want to have the original 352  .

how thick is the grease on the enigne and bellhousing. that would be a good idea of how long the engine has been in the truck. if it is super thick and looks like its never been cleaned off since the 60's then you have a better guess at it. ifit is pretty clean that means one of two things. it was kept clean or it has possibly been replaced.

What about using the date code? :)
Compare it to the pickup's build date. :)

Found another block casting number(date code) for your year. C7AE-6010 or as i said above C6ME-6010-A. If it's one of these numbers, I'd put money on it's original block. Still unknown if it's been bored some in a rebuild. Anything with C8 or C9 or D anything would be not original and probably a 360. C= the 60' and the following number is the year in that decade. D=the 70's. As D3TE-6010 would be a a 1973 finished 360 block. The TE stands for truck engine, ME-mercury engine, AE- Ford engine. 6010 stands for -Finished Block.

Good luck.

Those aren't "date codes" those are part number and update codes. :/
The date codes are just 4 figures like 8A12 would mean Jan 12 '68 in your case.

All the date codes I've found on my pickup (bought it new in '75) are from mid/late
January, one from late December and the York A/C casting is from like ~6 months
earlier. It's the only part I've found so far that was stored any length of time and
I don't understand why.

My '75 F100 SC parts truck and my '75 F150 were both made in the same week.
So were all the parts I have date codes for.

The "build date codes" that are on the tags of things like carburetors and steering
gears and (used to be on) engines too, are only three figures long like the two tags
at the top from my two Ford9inch axles...
http://www.panix.com/~alvinj/file12/Ftags.jpg
"5AD" = '75 Jan 4th week

The part+update numbers on -both- my FE-to-T18 bell housings are C5TA-7505-8.
Neither one was made in '65, see it? ;)

Yikes,...he measured the stroke already?

Alvin, casting numbers ARE date codes. C= the 1960's decade; D= the 1970's and so on. As he has figured out his heads are not original. No way. They were CASTED in 1968. Look it up. the H,..means they were changed 8 times from the original casting. We know from his post that he does not have any tags which on his engine would have been under the coil??

You are correct in the fact that would have the PRODUCTION code which would tell us when the engine was ASSEMBLED.
Much like your bell housing C5TA=casted in 1965(C5) for truck line(T) and considered part of the chassis(A). The production code only tells us when they actually put it together on your truck so hypothetically it could be put on any truck for 10 years prior. So,...if Mr. 67 would take a wire brush to the right upper front part of his block and get me that number,...? the fact that it's got a different head means nothing. That coded head is a popular casting number so the originals owner(s) could have just replaced a head. C

shoot, after 40 years,..who knows,...??? A funny thing about my SB bump,..the casting number was C7ME-A which is cataloged as a 428 block :woohoo:
This truck had been a special order from the VIN with sea foam green and air conditioning etc...so I couldn't wait to check the stroke,..no such luck,..360

This was a good resource for reading date codes:
