360 rear sump to front sump
as part of my dealings i traded my rear sump oil pan and i now have a front sump pan. the rear sump pan had the dipstick tube in the pan. the front sump pan does not. there is a place in the front of the block for where the dip stick tube would normally go, but it is not drilled out. can i drill this out? what size bit would i use? would it be better to get a different pan with the tube in it? i need some help here.

Re: 360 rear sump to front sump
That should just be a plug in the hole. I just went out and to a look at the block I have which had a rear sump pan, and that's all it is. Just like a freeze plug but smaller.
If you already put the front sump pan on, and it's in the truck the easiest way I could think would be to drive the plug thru with a punch and fish the plug out of the pan with a magnet.

your daughters? if so, tell them congrats.
the guys were soda blasting the inside of the house next door-something about getting the smoke smell out from the fire. i was choking on that crap all day. one guy comes over because he seen me cleaning up that pan and soda blasted it for me. pretty cool of him.

Re: 360 rear sump to front sump
Hey Ezernut9mm, your painted pan looks excellent!
I'm curious about one thing: what's your reason for changing a rear sump pan to a front sump? I'm currently dealing with an issue regarding the difference between these two, so I'd be interested in knowing more about what you're doing.
Thanks!
Robroy

Re: 360 rear sump to front sump
the engine came out of a 71 f100 4x4 and the guy that bought the truck also needed the pan/pickup tube/ main bolt for the engine he was putting back into it. i did have it installed in the new project and everything fit ok. the front sump is shallower than the rear sump pan so now there is more room.robroy wrote:Hey Ezernut9mm, your painted pan looks excellent!

Re: 360 rear sump to front sump
Hey Ezernut9mm thanks for replying! I see what you're saying about your pan; that makes sense.
My problem is described in detail here:

If you have words of wisdom for me it would be highly appreciated!
Thanks Ezernut9mm!

Re: 360 rear sump to front sump
all i can tell you is that on the stock rear sump pan the clearance for the 4x2 linkage-like yours, was only about an inch and a half. i didn't measure it, but it was pretty close and would have worked fine. looks like your only choices are to replace the pan or maybe have it notched out by someone that does that type of work. hope that helped.

Re: 360 rear sump to front sump
Thanks Ezernut9mm!
So the stock 4x4 pan has an inch or two of clearance when the engine is fully installed?
This Milodon pan actually has a negative 1-2" of clearance--it hits the steering parts before the engine is sitting in its mounts.
I think you're right that I'll need to go with a new pan. The 4x4 pitman arm might not be enough to get this to work for me, since the factory 4x4 pan isn't as deep as this one.
Thanks again!

Re: 360 rear sump to front sump
on the bright side robroy, that pan should sell easy enough and get you a few bucks for the pan you need. i know how frustrating all this stuff is. i'm going through it all right now with my 66 project.

Re: 360 rear sump to front sump
Hey Ezernut9mm that's a good point! I'm somewhat hoping that when I explain it to the engine builder, they'll buy the right pan for me. It was supposed to fit my truck, after all. We'll see!
