Duraspark I ignition module

Post by montana_hiboy »

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyone know of a source for the Duraspark I ignition module, it's the 7-wire module used on 74-75's, the Duraspark II went to a 6-wire module from 76 onward, i really don't want to upgrade to DSII if i don't have to, my three parts stores in town all stock a 75 module but they are 6-wire units and included in the box is a note stating "ford deleted the blue wire but the module will still work for your vehicle" well news flash to ford, no it will not, the note doesn't state why the blue wire was deleted or give any directions as to how to make it work, just that it was deleted, i installed all three and got nothing, no crank, nothing (truck still fires with my old module but it's on its way out) places like LMC, NPD and DC list the module for my application but after a phone call to them and a hands on look at the module on their part they too are 6-wire modules, even Green sales who deals in obsolete OEM and NOS ford parts took a look at their modules and all were 6-wire, same deal with my local ford dealer, so my options now are scouring my local salvage yard and searching on ebay or lastly just swapping over to the ubiquitous blue grommet DSII set-up, so i guess my question is three fold, 1) does anyone know of a source for this module other than junk yards and ebay? 2) why was the blue wire deleted and what function did it perform? 3) can the 6-wire module be made to work? sorry for the long winded post but i just wanted to be as thorough as i could, thanks.

Any parts store should be able to get you the correct 7 wire box you need. They are the same price at O'Reileys here.

Don't go to the dealer, they just over charge.

Could also go with an aftermarket ignition box, like MSD, Mallory, Crane, etc. I added mine (Summit's version of a Mallory) 2 years ago, and been trouble free since.

This question sounds familiar. ;) LOL :)

No kidding on this, I bought one and it worked...

Standard Motor Products LX-201
http://www.rockauto.com

I had ordered it, then put it on hold when there was some
question on a website forum whether it'd work or not. :/

Told RockAuto my concerns they forwarded my email to
Standard Motor Products and got an email from them. :)
We discussed the missing wire and it's retroactively fixed
on the LX-201 to work with one wire missing.

Years before, moved mine to the other side of the apron...

Maybe this is sober enough for you though i doubt it...

I've tried all the aftermarket modules that are retrofitted with the new 6-wire configuration....
STANDARD #LX201
NIEHOFF #FF401
ECHLIN #TP36
BORG WARNER #CBE3
WELLS #F101

They simply will not work on my application, i just plugged in an old 7-wire Motorcraft module i picked up earlier today at my local pick-n-pull for 5 bucks and my truck fired right up, that blue wire is needed, at least in my case.

Actually no, this is more like it soberwise but that is very interseting inforDation about yours not working with the standardlx201do you onw a meter know how to use it why wasn't that infordation included in the originalpaost and laid out where it'd be easy to read?

And what happen to the part about it "not cranking"? ...that's a friggin starter problem. LOL :)
If you are looking for free help or just getting along with others in general, it usually works best
to look and actually work at it a little bit to -find- the positive part in what they are saying.
No kidding. :)

The conversation will go no where looking for the negative.

Drunk or not, you've got to admit your post was a mess and on three website forms and two places on
one of the websites. Step back and look at it, don't it look like it was posted by someone that was drunk
to you too? LOL :)

I'm thinking you've got something else wrong with your pickup.
And I betcha, us working together, with you using a meter,
...we can find it and fix it.
Are you game? :)

Is it ok with you to waste a hundred other peoples time?
...just to save yourself a few moments by being sloppy with your post?

{bad word} you then. LOL :)

Apparently you're the only one having an issue with my post, i think i laid out the problem pretty coherently, perhaps you were drunk when you read it, if you want to help fine, if you don't that's fine too but critiquing my post as if i was writing a dissertation on electrical theory is of service to no one.

http://www.fordification.com/bumpwiki/i ... -_Overview

"Changes for the ’76 system are the blue overload shunt lead is no longer required and is eliminated due to internal improvements in the ignition module. The ignition module now has six leads. Ignition connectors are revised to reflect the reduction from seven to six leads."

My info also shows the correct PN for that module as:

- Ford Part # D4AZ-12A199-B
- Motorcraft Part #DY-157-A

Here's a schematic that's not included (yet) in that BumpWiki article:
