Can an engine sit in a frame w/o a transmission?

Post by mrtleavitt »

I am needing to transport a frame and an engine. Can I bolt the FE 390 on the frame without a transmission on it to help support it? I'm worried that with just the two motor mounts to hold it that the engine will fall forward or backwards.

If the cab is on it, put a 2x4 between the engine and the cab, then strap it back. If its just the frame, then all I can think of would be to put a strap pulling forward and one pulling backwards to stabilize it. Kinda like a dirtbike in a truck bed.

it will fall backwards if there isnt anything behind it to support it. i do not know how far back it will fall but it could go back far enought to entangle with the steering linkages. i have a truck sitting that i pulled the trans out of. and the engine is still in it. i put a block of wood under the flywheel and the steeringlinkage so that it wouldn't fall backwards while just sitting there. if it is a truck pull the enigne and put it in the bed. ifit has a bed. or take a trans case with you and bolt that to it and use that to hold it in there. it doesn't have to be a full transmission. just the case with tailhousing and trans mount.
