Truck won't start. Load screeching noise
Hello everyone. Just bought a '70 a week ago, and now it won't start. I put in a new battery right after I bought the truck. I drove it to the gas station earlier in the day and it started up fine. Went out to move the truck later, and it won't start. It makes a loud screeching noise. Kind of like the noise when the vehicle is already running, and you turn the key thinking you are starting it. Any Ideas. Thanks

Do you mean like the starter is spinning and not engaging the flywheel? Is it manual or auto?

Why is it that the trucks are always the best running vehicles in the family?

the bendix or starter drive in the starter is probably not enguaging properly. or the teeth on it have been chewing on the flywheel. take the starter off and go have it tested at the parts stroe. while it is off look at the teeth on the flywheel and see how they look. if they look like they are worn or not.

Turn the crankshaft with a socket (7/8 , 15/16?) just a little bit, then the starter gets some fresh teeth.
If your fan belt is tight enough it might turn without a wrench.
Make sure the KEY IS OFF so it wont start with your hands in there.

I agree with Fordman. Have the starter checked out and check your flywheel for wear.

I also agree with Fordman.
What I suggested was just to try to get it started and get it home.

I also say its your starter. Has the truck been sitting for a long time before you bought it? If yes, just replace it. They aren't that much $$$ anyway.
