Signs you have too much oil in your pan

Post by 1970FordTK »

As the topic states, what are some of the signs you have too much oil in the pan even if your dip stick says its not. After all with all the poop some previous owners have done to there rigs, I don't wish to overlook something because I think its a fact when it isn't. If at all possible could those who know discribe what to look/listen for if that is the case. Any and all info ya'll think is relevant would be a plus to me. Thanks in advance. :?

Find out what the actual capacity should be and change the oil and see where it is at on the dipstick then. I bought my truck and drove it 2 hours home, during the trip it leaked over 4 quarts of oil!! I later found out that if you follow the dipstick you would be trying to put almost 10 quarts into a 302 which really only takes 5 or 6. What a mess!!

well it depends on how overfull.

you might be able to hear it slapping the crank which robs power too, and i've had one that burned oil like crazy when overfull

right after you run the enigne check the dipstick. if it has bubbles on the dip stick then the engine has too much oil in it. the bubbles are caused by the crankshaft churning up the oil. this happened to me. the po had too much oil in it when i got the truck that is how i know to check for oil bubbles on the dipstick.

The previous owner of my truck put on an afermarket pan. The stick reads full after only 4 quarts (including filter full). I don't want to put any more in because I'm afraid to blow a seal. I figure as long as the pressure stays at 40psi then everything is ok.

Thanks for the replys folks, I will be able to find out the answer for sure later very soon. Motor has gone to having a very desrenable knock, I will be pulling the engine out to find it. When I have it out and can get the measurement of how far down in the pan below the crank the oil should be and fill it to that level with the timing cover off to make sure. Looks like my engine stand will be getting some use sooner than I would like.

R Smith,

I'm not going to tell you that you are wrong but...... I have never heard of an aftermarket, small capacity pan. I don't profess to know everything but I can't imagine what the purpose of a pan would be that would reduce the capacity by 1 quart. All F series trucks that I can remember, and I didn't look this up, were 5 quarts with filter. Oil pressure oils bearings and yes if you have enough pressure you probably won't have a catastrophic failure. Proper oil capacity is important because low oil capacity will contribute to high oil temperature, reduced contaminant carrying capacity and more rapid breakdown.

I,m only trying to be helpful here. I would really look into that pan and or replace it with an original so you are carrying the correct amount of oil.

R. Smith, Perhaps the PO changed the pan but used the old dipstick. Might look into that. I'd say at least 5 quarts with the filter.
Side oiler FE, see if you can catch me!!!
