Clifford intake & throttle linkage
I'm putting a Clifford intake and Holley 390cfm carb on my 300-6.
Who has done this? And how did you do the thottle linkage? Show me some pix, if you've got 'em.
Thanks in advance!!

Re: Clifford intake & throttle linkage
Thanks for the suggestion. Actually, I'm on fordsix as well and posted the same question.
The advice from there was to go with a cable set-up. I guess I'm trying to go with a "rod" linkage set-up as opposed to a cable. Although its all negotiable at this point. I've since found some brackets that bolt on one of the carb studs that would allow it.
Currently I've got an assortment of heim joints, all-thread, a worthless Mr Gasket rod with threads on only ONE end (& Mr Gasket tech support can't even tell me how its INTENDED to be used), etc.
The stock linkage from the gas pedal has a ball-end ball joint connector on it. It would be far, far simpler if I could use that. Then there is a link with "socket-ends" on each side that has an offset to it. This used to connect to the 90 degree pivot piece. The offset might be handy to keep in place. But I'm sure it could be worked around with the heim joints.
Right now my big question is: Are there different sizes of linkage ball joints? Looking online I'm finding some pieces that might make all of this closer to a breeze. But they keep referencing Type 1, Type 2, etc.
Anyone know what "Type" ball joints are in the stock linkage??
Thanks in advance.

Re: Clifford intake & throttle linkage
I believe I've got it solved!
My friend that's a salesman for NAPA couldn't even get the right parts. However, Carquest was able to provide a ball/socket set where the socket piece fit the stock link from the pedal AND had the correct female threads that I was looking for.
From there all I had to do was cut my all-thread to length and add my heim joint to the other end.
Right now I'm waiting for some bushings to come in the mail so that I can reduce the hole size on the throttle itself and attach the heim. They should be here tomorrow.
I'll post pictures when it is done.

good looking set up---hope that's not a foam element air cleaner--those are fire hazard deluxos

Re: Clifford intake & throttle linkage
Nice work all around guys. Looks very clean!
I had some Clifford stuff on my 76 CJ-7, as well as an Offy intake. Good products from both companies. I was pleased with the outcome.
67MercM100, not to rain on your parade, but I agree with binder56jd the foam Eddy filters are junk. After awhile the foam tends to break down & looses all of its form. It will start to flake off & be sucked right into the carb/engine. Better upgrade to a paper style airfilter to be safe.

That looks nice, good work!
I do have to agree about the foam filters.
I would also mention that you probably want to make sure that the braided line and fule filter is not vibrating agains anything, braided stainless makes a fine hack saw...

Re: Clifford intake & throttle linkage
Great thread...
Thanks for the pics everyone, this helps me get my head around what I would like to do with my '77 300. I'm working on a F250 crew cab that will be doing some towing. It's got the NP435 tranny. I just really need better power on the hills, it seems I can't take even a slight incline without dropping to third - or lower. I'm currently all stock.
1) I need to pass local emissions. How far can I take this engine and still pass the sniff test?
2) I'd like to keep this on a budget. Based on what I'm reading I should do the intake (Clifford of Offy?), carb (400-500 cfm, right?), exhaust manifolds (later EFI's OK?) and a cam (which one?). Am I on the right track? Is the cost/hassle of a cam replacement worth the gain?
BTW, I'm not a Holley fan, so what's the next best choice - Edelbrock, or...?

Re: Clifford intake & throttle linkage
UPDATE!
When the truck was at the mechanic's shop for exhaust, someone decided they liked my carburetor better than I did. They took the linkage along with the carb. I think that was probably because the bolt at the carb end was an allen head. It must have been far easier and quicker to just disconnect it at the other end.
I re-ordered the carb and scrounged the rest of the linkag parts up again. Then my semi-retired mechanic went on vacation, got behind and I had to (after 5 or 6 weeks) let him know he needed to get me going again.
On the short trip home, the socket came off the ball-stud on the pedal end twice. So I decided I had to come up with something different. After exhaustive Google searches, I found this place: http://www.midwestcontrol.com. I couldn't find any specs on the size of the ball-stud on the pedal-end. So I ordered the QD250. It's the same size socket (I think, anyway) as the connector I'd gotten from CarQuest - plus it has the right 1/4-28 threads for my linkage rod. Just to be safe, I also ordered the QD-187-3-4. It has a smaller socket, but the threads are too small for the 1/4-28 linkage rod. And to mate up the threads I got the SD-4F-3. Currently I've just got the QD250 on. It appears as though it will hold OK with the spring-loaded retaining sleeve. Time will tell once I get it back on the road.
Oh, and if you'll notice, I got a new air cleaner. They took the base of the other one that was attached to the carb. At least I don't have to worry about the foam element being a fire hazard. I also attached the linkage to the outboard side of the carb. I'm hoping that will keep it away from the valve cover.

Re: Clifford intake & throttle linkage
Have you filed a report with the police about the carb?
You may also want to file against the mechanics insurance carrier. It was at his shop. In some states, he's got some responsibility, in others you're SOL. Wouldn't hurt to check.

Re: Clifford intake & throttle linkage
Oh yeah - The shop filed a report with the police. They're taking responsibilty. We still haven't worked out who owes who how much for what. I'm pretty sure they owe us right now. But we know them pretty well, so we're not worried. Since it still needs all kinds of work, we'll probably just take it back and let them "work off" what they owe us.flyboy2610 wrote:Have you filed a report with the police about the carb?

I hate to hear that. Nothing worse than a thief.
Im glad you got rid of the foam filter! They are junk. That K&N style will be much better.
