Changing out points for Ignitor

Post by pickly »

anyone have any feedback on changing out points for the Ignitor system? I see those in the LMC catalog and i'm thinking about taking that route instead of messing around with the points. There's two models that kind of look the same. Anyone have either of these systems that could offer some pre buying advice.

thanks,

I've had good luck with the Pertronix, both original and Pertronix II. Next weekend will be the first time I will install one in a big block though. In small block engine installs, with the optional "Flame Thrower" coil, I usually open the gap to about 0.040" for a little hotter spark. Not sure this is necessary with the low compression 390, but figured I'd try it to see if it makes any difference.
I picked up the Pertronix II and Flame Thrower Coil (in black) for $123 shipped through Amazon.com.

I used the Pertronix Ignitor 1 that way i could still keep my stock coil. i probably should get a flamethrower. Its a real simple swap in as metioned above. i noticed easier starts, better mileage and more low end power.

We used the Duraspark 2 system from a 76' Ford and it has been great. We picked up the module (only use the Blue connector module), distributor, coil and engine harness from a wrecking yard. Then the cap, rotor, and wires came from NAPA. I suppose the only pain was having to replace and modify the engine wiring harness. The folks here had the smarts to help me through it!! And I can be like a rock! :D

I installed the Petronix using my coil about 3 years ago and it has been great. I have not had to open the distributor since putting in the Petronix.

A little over 5 years ago, I changed mine over to the Pertronix I along with their Flamethrower Coil. About as easy as changing points & condenser along with the coil change. Opened the plugs to .045. Has been running perfectly since then, along with the quicker starts, slightly better mileage, and smooth running, I highly recommend.

Petronix is really simple to install and works fine for a stock engine.
I am doing the Duraspark distributor, TFI coil and GM HEI module. $20 in junkyard parts, maybe an hour to install and it's a good 50,000 volt system. Your original coil might muster 15,000.
You can aslo see how to use your points to trigger a TFI ignition if you want. The points are said to last forever because there is no high voltage. So with a little ingenuity and not much $$ you can have a really good ignition

I've used the Pertronix 1 in a couple trucks as well as the Cobra. Also had one in a boat for 10 years without a problem.
They have the original, the II and the III was just releast last week. The latest also has a build in adjustable rev limiter.

Was that one of the 90s Mustang funny-looking-box coils you used (those are $22 new at my local parts house)? I have the dist. and can scavenge a HEI module pretty easy.

I did it over the counter at Oreilly for the old 427u that was in the tow beast. Was around $30

Never had to take the rotor cap off again until I pulled the motor out 4 years later. ran like a top. When it had points I had it open 3-4x a month to file or gap the points.

I used a coil that was bolted to a junk 300 EFI, probably early 90s. I think the Mustang ones are the same basically.
