Truck stalling out going up hills

Post by nadams »

I filled up the tank and the next day I am having fuel issues. I replaced the fuel filter on the mechanical fuel pump and found a bunch of flakes of rust (?) in the pump. I cleaned these out and replaced the filter. It works great on level ground but as soon as I start up a hill it looses all power and tries to stall. I can back up hills with out a problem. I am guessing that I have rust or some other substance in my fuel tank. So here are my questions:

1. Easiest way to remove the tank?
2. Drain the tank and just put back in or is there a tank treatment to kill/cover rust?
3. While I have tank out is there anything I should do before putting it back in?

I am planning to do this in the next couple of days schedule permitting so any feedback will be much appreciated.

the in cab tank only comes out one way. remove the bolts from the tank. loosen the filler tank hoes. come in fromt he passenger side and lift the bottom of the tank up until the filler hose comes off. drain tank with two people a funnel and 2 five gallon buckets or more if needed. while draining tank filter fuel through the wife [censored] towels. they have several tank rust treatments out there to seal up the tanks. they may also help with the rust problems. one way to get rid of some of the rust is to take some nuts and botl put them in the tank and shake the tank in every way possible to break loose any rust you can. use the sealer kit you buy and follow those instructions before reusing the tank. make sure to blow out fuel lines while tank is off. blow air fromthe fuel pump back into the tank. before tank removal.

The Por 15 Fuel tank sealer kit works good http://www.por15.com/SPECIAL-Sealer-Met ... tinfo/S7Q/ That does a 25 gallon tank.

I had the same problem, check if your passing gear is hooked up. if it isn't either hook it up, or when going up hill shift into 2nd.

Both those engines would climb a hill in fourth.

I guess I could have added a little more info.

This is my 68 F-100 3 on the tree straight 6 truck. Not the 67 or the highboy. Thanks for the info on the sealant though. I am going to Westbay to see if they have it tonight.

That is confusing. The only thing I can think of it perhaps a weak fuel pump and the tank being above the engne helps.

Wrong float setting too or crap in the tank or carb covering the fuel inlet or jet intakes.
