I'm doing the exact same thing right now. The only differance is that I'm buying a 390 crank kit from Oreillys for $207 and turning it into a 390. If you were interested in doing the same here's the recipe. You can use the 360 pistons (as long as they don't have a full skirt), but you would need some 390 rods. With the 390 crank and rods and the 360 pistons you will get a 390 with somewhere between 9.0:1 and 9.5:1 cr (same as a car 390), whereas your 360 is about 8.2:1 cr right now. It would still run nicely on pump gas and give you some more oomph. I think the bang for the buck is definetly worth it, as long as you can find a deal on a good set of 390 rods. Otherwise just do like you said! Good luck!

:yt: You end up with a very strong engine, same bullet proof durability and to top it off, the higher compression tends to give a little more mileage over the stock FE truck engine. I used to go a step up and use aftermarket pistons for closer to 10:1, but if I had a 360 with the right (skirt) pistons and good stock bore, I'd rock with it.

I'm not exactly a spring chicken, and I've had about every Ford engine known to the general public (yes, even quite a few english Fords).

I've built about all of 'em over the years as well.
Of the pre-EFI engines, there's NONE that doesn't have it's place, but doing a 360, I just can't bring myself to not use 390 crank and rods. Don't get me wrong, the 360 is a GREAT engine and I do have love for 'em, but for the benefits of the 390 (higher compression ratio version that is) vs. the cost of the job, I always go 390 ^.

Fist off, my opinions are opinions, do what you want to do for yourself! Also, I'm sure ppl are going to disagree with me on the mileage front, but take into account that I am pointing out the higher comp ratio setup as I've yet to see it NOT improve. FWIW, I found a place selling 428 crank kits online a few months ago in the $500 range.

OH! and a member is selling a gt cam here!

have fun!

so this kit from Oreillys just consists of the Crank or is there more to it??? I ask because I'm interested in doing this to my 360 in which ever truck I get be it the 67-68-or 71 do they have a similar kit for the 3.98" Stroke 410/428 Crank???

No crank for the 410/428; I couldn't get that lucky! The kit comes with the finished crank and new rod and main bearings. You have to supply a core, but he told me my 360 crank would be fine. If you don't have a core it's an extra $70 charge. I'm sure other parts stores have similar kits but I haven't checked as I like oreillys and don't care about a few dollars difference I might find elsewhere.

OK, I pick up my heads tomorrow. $457.40 out the door. That's $200 for the replacement heads (mine were cracked) and $257.40 for the rest of the machining and gaskets. That's right, gaskets are included. I guess I'll be giving my driving impressions soon then huh? Can't wait to drive my old truck. I've been complaining to my wife that I want to drive an old junky car/truck again, looks like I finally get to. :D
