Heater control valve

I'm referring to the heater control valve that is adjusted from inside the cab. My cable is broke and siezed. I was thinking about just replacing the valve with a hot water type valve that I could just turn under the hood when the season changes. Yes I live in Texas and its only cold enough for heat for a couple months a year. Has anyone else done this? If so shat size valve did you use? And did it work well?

i guess you could do that. i have a cable and a valve if you would rather keep it easier to use though. i just need to know if you have factory air or no air.

Oh I forgot to say that LMC has the replacement for $30 plus S&H. Figured a regular hot water valve would be less than $10.

Plus I'm speaking of the hot water hose that runs up the passenger side of the engine compartment carring hot water to the heat unit. I was thinking that if you cut the hot water flow. Then that makes the air that always flows out of the floor vents not to be heated. Thats my idea anyway?

Dang quick reply. I wasn't even finished with my thoughts. LOL. I have no airconditioning. I don't think I would be too inconvienced to have to manually switch it on and off under the hood.

yea if you can make the fittings for it that could work. i think the parts store also has just the valve for around 10.00 new. and it can be closed manually too.

My cable has been broke since I got the truck. Even in Texas it's a hassle to get under the hood to open and close it.

From what I found online, Advance Auto Parts shows three different ones, ranging from $14 to $30 depending on which one you need. I think I paid $30 for mine from Dennis Carpenter.

it would work ok, the 69 ranger that i have has a manual hot water valve (ball valve) that you are talking about. it works great, and dont leak, my older brother is a plumber so it didnt cost me anything. it is not a truck that i am fixing up thou. on my 68 i am goin to get the correct one since i am trying to make everything close to orignal with ford parts. but the idea you have works and i have seen it on several ford trucks bumps and dents...

WARNING THREAD HI JACK AHEAD!! Sorry guys but which heater hose should the valve under the hood be in?I think I have mine on the wrong hose.What does it matter if I do? The heater does heat but come to think of it it does seem to be on all the time.My girl friend does ask me if the heater is on.TIA,Calvin

i think its the one from the water pump.

Yes thats the one I'm referring to. I guess, after reading the other threads on a search in this area, that air will always flow. And I guess it will be slightly warmer than the outside temp when the valve is closed. Yet when the vavle is open, it actually heats the air.

Does anyone know the size of the hot water "ball" valve I would need to buy? I don't really want to take the original out before I have something to replace it with.

the hose size is 3/4. so you'll need something to fit inside fo that size of hose.

You can also purchase one at Advance auto. I know I bought one today for $20 nad it hooks right up in the place of the factory one. They also have the manual ones you control from under the hood for $10. I also picked up a cble from a truck at the scrap yard and paid like $1 for it. Mine is connected to hose closest to the Thermastat if that helps any.
