Re: This is for Kaptnkaos
Thanks 7DF250...
I've actually seen that one on TV...
I only really go to one Ren Faire, the Washington Renaissance and Fantasy Faire. (it used to be in Gig Harbor, but was moved to Belfair because it out grew the Gig Harbor site)
It is put on by a friend of mine, so I tend to go every year...
The events I usually go to are hosted by The Society of Creative Anachronism (SCA), which is a world wide organization that strives to research and replicate life as it might have been during the middle ages...
The big difference is that the SCA has very few fantasy elements involved...
In the SCA, you don't pretend to be a historical character, like someone from a movie or actual history, which is what renaissance faires are all about.
You don't see elves, faeries and such like you do at ren faires.
Instead, it's like being yourself, but you live during the middle ages.. like you were transported back in time...
You ask the big questions, Who am I? Where am I? How do I live? What do I eat? ... all the important ones, Then you create your persona based on the answers...
It is a constant refining work, as you learn more, and adapt...
My persona Ailin O'Broin O Liath Cuan, lived in the mountains of County Wicklow (the area south of Dublin) during the early part of the 14th century (1325ish).
He liked to fight and made his living mostly as a mercenary... fighting against tyranny at every oppertunity.
His favorite meal was pheasant, red potatoes, boiled cabbage, and Irish soda bread washed down with several pints of dark Irish ale... which he was known to do whether there was food or not...
He was a direct decendant of two great kings of Leinster, King Maelmorda and his son Bran mac Maelmorda... who was the patriarc of the Clann O'Broin.
Most of my persona is based on my actual family history so it makes doing research alot of fun...
Check it out... http://www.sca.org This is the main site
Gotta run....

I definitely appreciate your desire to learn more of your genealogy, but I've got enough stress living in the present. I travel to Europe every year and have visited Stonehenge, England. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stonehenge Now that's some impressive rock work!
