Pulled the heads. Cylinder walls look great.

Post by bjde0b »

I decided to clean the engine while I have it out of the truck and replace the gaskets since they are eleven years old. When I pulled the heads tonight I couldn't believe how clean the walls were. There was carbon, but this does not suprise me since it is not FI. The cross hatchings from the rebuild eleven years ago are still very prevalent.

I am not planning on pulling pistons, only cleaning everything with carb cleaner and replacing gaskets. I will give it a fresh coat of paint while I am at it.

I did have one foul. I was pouring the water out and I forgot that the lifters were still in. I dumped five of them in a two big buckets of oil (The buckets need to go to Autozone). I fished them out with a magnet and I placed them in the space where they fell into the bucket. I am pretty sure I got them in the correct order, but not 100%. I know you are not supposed to rearrange them, but should I be concerned?

No you can't they are worn into the pattern of the original cam lobe and they will eat the cam so fast that by the time you drove across town your cam would be failing. Lifters are only 2.47 here for stock FEs.

I like the advice of replacing the lifters. Will I be okay reusing the rods and rockers if I only replace the lifters?

Even though I am 27, my Dad was still disappointed that I pulled the heads. He has the mentality that if it ain't broke then don't fix it. I want to replace all gaskets and seals so I don't have to worry about it leaking on my clean and painted frame.

Edit: I looked at Autozone's website and it says that stock lifters are $4. Where can I get them for $2.50? Also, do I need to replace all, or the ones that fell in the bucket?

O'reilly , Checker Kragen is were I got that price now even 4 is not that bad compared to a new cam and lifter set.

Just the ones you dropped in the bucket. Everything else is able to be swapped.. I never swap rocker arms on the shaft they can be happy with the wear they created but it is not critical.

Not that it is a deal breaker by all means, but I can't find the lifters for $2.50 on O'Reilly's either. If I am only replacing 5, then the difference isn't much. I am just trying to tap into your secret knowledge.
