The only bolts I recommend changing besides the obvious damaged ones are rod bolts if you hot rod the motor. Rod bolts on a stock FE are not the greatest bolts in the world.

Gaskets and sealing chemicals are about 100 total for the top end. Get Spray Carb Cleaner it is a great degreaser for getting sealants to work better.

Re:how can I hop up my 390

Post by coop »

OK i have decided to go the distance. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do to with my 70 F250 390? Currently stock, the truck will be used primarily for camping with a pop up cab over camper. And also occasional towing of my 4x4. i would still like to have reasonable gas mileage and decent power. Any suggestions, cam, headers, carb, intake?
I would like to be left with a dependable engine that will last awhile.

Well I pulled the heads thanks for the advice to do it. Apparently there was some wear in them 2 valve guides needed to be replaced and I had the exhaust seats changed to hardened ones I also had the exhaust manifolds surfaced. The heads look brand new. I got away for $550.00 not to bad. The machinist used be the machinist at NAPA in San Diego until they closed the machine shop. He purchased all the equipment and opened his own shop. Owner operator it's a good combination. :D

The front most guides on a FE are the most prone to wear if everything else is okay. Lack of oil and the rears are the wettest. Our slightly tipped engines produce that effect.
