double roller chain gear and crank sleeve

Post by fordman »

my neighbor rebuilt his cousins 360. they put a double roller chain in it. and now the sleeve behind the damper wont seat properly and it leaks oil. what has he done wrong and or what are his options. my thought was maybe the roller gear was in backwards. and wouldn't let the sleeve go back far enough. i told him i would ask here to find out. or does he need a different sleeve. i think his truck is a 71

sounds like the crank gear is on backwards. Did they look to see if the chain was lined up with the cam gear? I have seen people put small chevy gears on wrong and couldnt get the damper on all the way,let alone they tried to use washers behind the cam gear to 'space' out the gear to get the chain on!
Also have them check the woodruff key, make sure it hasnt angled up at the crank gear. (Been so long since I have messed with an FE that now I am second guessing myself! )
Good Luck

the sleeve isnt going in far enough to go past the seal . its right at the edge of the seal and just barely in. but no nothing has been done to it yet.

Has he got the two crank keys in already?

All my stuff uses Chevy keys now LOL but the stock stuff has one key for the balancer and a second for the spacer and timing set. If he is trying to put the outermost key in, the spacer cant go in all the way
