A tappy engine....300six
Is it true you can just drop in a new set of hydraulic lifters into an engine with some miles on it? The idea being to quiet it down, and get better pump-up on the lifters?

It is true if the cam lobes are in good shape. use breakin lube and run it above 2000 for 20-30 minutes just like a new cam.
You might try some ATF or Marval Mystery oil in the crankcase before doing it though.

Re: A tappy engine....300six
yeah Ive done the Marvel M.Oil a couple times since Ive owned it, and it has helped alot. I think its pretty clean but it just seems like those lifters could be quieter. Like there's a couple which are the noisiest. Ive read about taking out the lifters with magnets, and the whole process, but wonder how new lifters would settle into old bores. I guess its not a problem.

The 240/300s are all noisy on the lifters. You just have to get used to it.
They are on the side of the engine and the noise is dampend by the block and Intake like on a V8.

It might be worth it to replace them. I've had several 300's and every one has been different, I'm sure it depends on the engine's maintainance. My friends truck has a EFI 300 with around 320K on it now and you can't even hear that engine run.

If you're gonna change the lifters you may as well put a hot cam in it, 4 barrel intake, headers, forged pistons, three angle valve job, head porting, gears, chrome valve cover, turbo, nitrous, and a supercharger while you're in there. You'd have the only nitro-super-turbo bump on the site!

Re: A tappy engine....300six
Ya they are all a little different.
Did you replace the valve springs? Mine are used but the lifters are new. They made a little noise from day 1 after a full rebuild.
It is easy to pull them out and check for wear...should only take 30min.

Re: A tappy engine....300six
Yup, same here. I have had some real noisy ones and a couple you could stand beside and not know it was running. You might have the adjustable kind too. Ford had several different configurations, the best one is like a Chevy, it has a 3/8 stud and you can adjust those. Others have a necked down stid to 5/16 and those just tighten down all the way and I guess the newer ones are pedestal mount and they are also non adjustable.averagef250 wrote:It might be worth it to replace them. If you have adjustable rockers you can adjust them while the engine is running. Remove the valve cover and let it idle while adjusting. There's no mess, and if you decide to replace the lifters your half way there with the valve cover off.

Re: A tappy engine....300six
remember the 300 is a gear drive timing set--a noisy thing to begin with--like the ihc gas burners from days of yore

If it's still holding good oil pressure and not burning much oil, I'd probably just replace the lifters. It may get you another 50k miles out of it, you never know!

Re: A tappy engine....300six
I had a little tap-tap in my 360. Turns out one of the pushrods had the ball on the end almost worn off. Changed them all and no more tap-tap.
