I think a nice rebuild of a 390, zero decked, and cammed to peak around 5000 rpm would do the trick.
Headers and good duals, and some very mild head work, a good multi-angle modern valve job and especially a quick clean up around the valve guides and a nice transition bowl to valve seat would make a torque monster.
Although as you know I am a stroker lover, you dont need it for that amount of work, and after buying a crank, rods and pistons, versus more common 390 pistons, the stroker starts to exceed its benefit for the power you need.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if hes buying a crank and pistons, isn't the recipe for a 410 just a 428 crank, 360 rods, and 390 pistons? I may have the rods and pistons mixed up, but either way the only extra cost would be the $$$ for a 428 crank compared to a 390 crank, and it would be worth 20 more cid. Just my

My personal 489 stroker has been together for 2.5 years, rev limiter is at 6700 and it cruises at 1500 in 5th gear, doesnt burn a drop of oil and I check the valves yearly, havent needed an adjustment yet, or a bolt turned...might need to get a new torque wrench DragonDragon wrote:I love strokers too when I race

However, that 489 FE motor is going in the 71 4x4 SB as soon as I am ready to lay the foundation for a Boss-headed 557 for the Mustang.
Remember, anything more than a 360 FE is a stroker too

I just read another post here by duckryder that says 390 truck pistons, 390/428 rods, and 428 crank make a 410. I assume that 390 truck pistons are the same as 410 pistons, or either can be used at least?Dragon wrote:410 pistons, 428 crank and 390 rods through 428 rods.

Because of the longer crank the Wrist pin hole would need to move if using the same rod. With most FEs at about .010 below the deck adding .2 the crank would make a mess. I might be wrong but the math says it isn't.
390 pistons are set for 3.78 stroke and the 410 for 3.98 20 times more than the deck height. or .2 farther up the Bore.

OK, just a few of my thoughts, By virtue of a longer stroke, leverage at the crankshaft, assuming we are filling the cylinders to the full charge, shouldn't any long stroke build more torque vs the same engine with a shorter stroke configuration? Because of longer piston travel length shouldn't I get a more complete burn and more energy and better fuel economy with a longer stroke at low rpm which by producing more torque, should be able to stay in OD or at least top gear longer?
Now lets take the $$$ out of the equation and say if I didn't want to spend the $$$ I could use my 6.0 F350. My old trucks are part work tool and part hobby. Thanks to all for the great responses.

BTW as the stroke gets longer, the burn isnt necessarily better. Think about a chamber getting infinitely bigger, the burn isnt as good as its under less compression.
However, in either case, go for a near zero deck (.042-.047 piston to deck clearance, including gasket) and you'll get the good turbulent mixture during compression and the burn you are looking for.

On other thing about stoke differences. Long stokes short rods reverse direction more violently they tend to suck the air in faster that way. Short strokes long rods reduce friction and move more air over time if the manifold has a slug of air sitting in place. So during the proper period they reach temporary but higher VE

thanks for all of the good advice guys. i think the next step is to put a pecil to the entire project and see which way to go.
I have 4 options: 1) do nothing, drive the truck with the 4BT and invest in ear plugs. 2) rebuild and drop in my 390 3) look for a 428 to rebuild and drop in 4) go all the way and stroke my 360 to a 416 or 445
