engine swap

Post by FordHam »

I was wondering if anyone had any experience or knowledge about installing a 351c engine in place of a 302. I have some information that the blocks are almost identical in respect to the length, and the 351c slightly wider. In crude mock up it appears the blocks could share the same engine mounts and therefore use the same perches. I don't know about oil plan clearance though. Any ideas, anyone done it. Thanks.

The only significant difference between the two is the deck height. A 351W is still considered a small-block, so it will bolt right up to the small-block perches.

Yup, the 351W and 351C are interchangeable. Ford actually designed them that way intentionally so they could use either and not have to change anything. Back in 70 when they came out the 351C and 351W 2V engines even had the same engine code because Ford planned to use either one for the same cars! If you have a 70 Mustang with a 351 2V you have a 50/50 chance of having a Cleveland!Anything externally on the engine will swap with a 70 or newer 302 or 351W such as mounts, trans, accessory brackets and pulleys (except for one small bracket on the head). Ford really was trying to standardize by then. Hawkrod

Cleveland and Windsor share everything externally? :? Don't you mean 302's and 351W? And does the Cleveland have the same small block bolt pattern? I know the 351M and 400 used the same 429/460 bolt pattern and early 400 used the small block bolt pattern but I just wanted to make sure I've got my facts straight. I've dealt with the 351M and 400 more so than the 302/ windsor stuff.

No, I mean what I wrote. A Cleveland, 302 and 351W all use the same crank pulleys, water pump pulleys, upper and lower alternator mounts, power steering mount, power steering pulley, transmission bolt pattern, motor mounts, and radiator. Ford did that on purpose. There are a few parts that do not interchange such as most AC brackets and the head bracket for the alternator but Ford really did try and make the engines interchangeable on the assembly line so that it did not matter which style engine they got in. Thanks for all the info guys. I have a spare 71 with a 351C in it and it looks like the oil pan just barely clears the forward most cross brace. Anyone know of any problems with that or if a 302 fits, so goes a 351C?

It will fit fine. I ran a 70 351C from a Cougar in my 67 F350 for years until I swapped a 460 in. Just use mounts for a 302 and it will all fit. Hawkrod

i had a bump that i traded for last year that had a 351m in it out of a dentside. it fit and worked fine. the onl mod they made since they had the wrong perches is they torched a larger hole in the perches to let the engine set level in the engine compartment.

I put one in a highboy for a kid once. It was very tight against the firewall and the manifolds had to be juggled on as we lowered the engine. That was on 300 towers moved back.
He was very unhappy with it and put a 300 back in.
