Can anyone tell me what type of grease to use for lubing the cam when changing points on a 390? Parts guys are telling me to use di-electric grease. It looks to me like that is more like vasoline. Vasoline is good for locking moisture out but it is not a lubricant.
Can someone give me info on this?

Re: distributor cam lube
Used to be points sets came with lube. But now in all the Checker/Autozone type stores they will sell you a disposable pack of points lube that they usually keep by the registers.
Whatever lube you use has to resist sling off at 2200 rpm when an engine is turning 4400 rpm.

Re: distributor cam lube
In the old old days there was a cotton disc in the top of dizzys to keep the advance shaft from getting stiff. Did anyone ever lube it? Probably got lost in the early 60s as a trade tip. All it took was a single drop of 10 weight oil (3 in 1 oil) to keep it until the next points change.
Now that most of us have worn dizzys and or motors that breath a little too much past the rings or valve guide seals we have free point and advance lubrication. The dizzy because it is not sealed is one more way for oil vapor over pressure to get out.
