I guess my assumption was this: if the timing chain has worn out bad enough to need replaced, the engine itself is well worn too and the less expensive parts would get you out to the next rebuild just fine.aramil wrote:my engine is going to last alot longer than my truck so i want somthing good, is cloyes a good brand? its not the roller i was looking at, but it seems decent and will get me by.

Re: bad timing chain
I had an engine that was rebuilt and then sat for 8 years after only 500 miles the chain jumped teeth due to 2 frozen links. After i had driven it for about 3000 miles. You never know. The truck got real sick coming home one night. The next day I changed the chain set and it got better.

Re: bad timing chain
I got a cloyes set from autozone and it seemed pretty decent. The engine runs strong and with no problems

Re: bad timing chain
i figured that is kinda what you meant willow, and if i follow the build ive created in my head, the 360 will only be in there tell i find a nice fuel injected 5.0 out of a mustang. but you know how that goes, if i had all the cars ive created in my mind i would be one happy camper

Boy will you be shocked going down from a torque machine 360 to a 302. You will get better mileage though.

Re: bad timing chain
You should see a supercharged 360 I built one Turbo 390 engine, never again though, aftermarket turbo sets are a real headache most times.
Though I always thought a full roller 302 ought to pull a lot of power due to the reduced friction.

Re: bad timing chain
You will definately want to degree your cam, as most new timing sets will advance your cam timing when set straight up. this will kill your top end power. (but help your emissions)
I feel a lot more like I do now than I did when I got here.

Depends on your cam. Most aftermarket sets have a straight up plus different advances and retards.ROADRUNNER wrote:You will definately want to degree your cam, as most new timing sets will advance your cam timing when set straight up. this will kill your top end power. (but help your emissions)

Re: bad timing chain
The Chain set also has straights up. They all do. Some have an offset cam alignment pin. Most use an offset crank gear.
You can use a Paxton blower setup like the Sunbeam Tiger used on the 260 SB Ford engine. It used a 4V manifold with an adapter and fed it through a pipe. I know they have made Roots style manifold for FEs in the 471, 671 and 871 style.

No more than a 471 on the street or you will have no gas mileage and too much boost for the stock bottom end. A blower tough bottom end will send you into the high 1000s.
