Fuel Pump question

This is probably an incredibly basic question, but:
I bought this old '67 Mercury M100. It's got a 300 6 cylinder in it that isn't the original engine.
There were NO (among other things) lines from the fuel line to the fuel pump or from the pump to the carb.
It's got one of those fuel pumps with the "canister" with the filter in it.

The question is: which side is "in" and which is "out"?? The "front hole" that is slightly lower than the rear.

I can get it running with "starter fluid". But I can't seem to get gas to the carb. I know that could be many things. I just want to make sure I've got the lines on the pump on correctly before going after other things.

Front goes to carb, rear is from tank.

They are not expensive.

If you blow into the tank, can you get flow out of the line down by the pump? Lots of these old tanks are pretty cruded up.

Does the pump have screws holding it together, or is it banded together in the middle with a ring? If its screws, then its pretty old (but rebuildable, and some of us would like it so don't throw it away). The newer pumps are not rebuildable.

The pics above are of the non-rebuildable kind. If its the culprit, I would dump it for a $30 replacement from Autozone with a lifetime warranty. Cheap, from China, probably will work great.......
