Re: 2bbl vs 4bbl vs 390 4bbl swap

Post by DuckRyder »

Let us try to stick to the topic, if I read the original posters proposition correctly, he has both the 352 and the 390, since he does not have a 429, 460, 514, 888, 1025, or 300 six those suggestions are not really helping him with the decision...

Not true. I had a 65 with a 352 and installed headers with the stock towers. No modifications required.
Some headers fit and some don't. Which manufacturer did you use that advertises theirs to fit a 65? That would be good information that we didn't have before.

I run a 390 and it's ok but I would sure never pull a healthy 352 to put in a 390. Have you tried a different 2 bbl? Maybe the race car carb isn't as efficient as it could be. I run a 350 Holley on my 390 and get around 12 mpg on the highway. City mpg I don't even want to know.lol

And fwiw, there is an easier way to deal with those broken off bolts without removing heads or engine. Keith has a picture up somewhere of an engine with the 5/16 bolts all the way through with nuts on the back. To get out the broken ones, I use a cutting torch but you need to be pretty handy with one to try it. A compact angle head drill and a short bit will do the trick too.

I am running a bone stock 360 with a two barrel in a 1972 F-250, C-6, power steering and brakes, and it gets a legitimate 13-14 miles to the gallow on the highway. Mileage was checked using Mapquest for the distance and topping off the gas tank before and after the trips. I do drive between 65 and 70 and the engine is old and a little tired, but it keeps on going. BTW, I almost never "floor it". There was some mention of duals above, sound nice, but that is about all I ever noticed for performance/mileage between single and duals. Just my :2cents:

So I asked for info on your headers, where is it??? If you are going to call someone a liar you could at least substantiate it with some facts.
