My quest: to have a drill press that turned under 100 rpm for larger bits. The slowest ones I had found were on the order of 240-260 on the double belt and 450 on the single belt.
As free things came my way, this is what I ended up putting together. I have about $35 into it. I still need a bigger chuck and to figure out an automatic shutoff. The self feed is really nice, just turn it on and step back.

Re: My home made drill press
boy howdy, what a unit.
the only thing that shocks me is no coves on the belts or gear units. I could just see getting sucked right in there.
one or two questions 1st how noisy is the gearing on that.
2nd what kind of bushings does it run, are they babit?
3rd how long is the stroke
4th power feed? or any chance of that.
man I can't stop looking at that thing, it reminds me of the old 1930's imperial 12 foot unit at the foundry, big, heavy, noisy as any thing can get, but works great.
