Words of wisdom for rear main seal?
I've pulled the 428 out of my '67 F-100 because the rear main seal is leaking. When I replace this seal, can any of you recommend ways to minimize my risk for future leaks here in the future?
Thanks much...

re: Words of wisdom for rear main seal?
Rope seal??? VERY thin coating of silicone, on the block surface and the main cap.
if you can get a rubber seal, install with one end of the seal partially sticking out of the block, the other partially recessed. Same thing on the main cap. Idea here is to NOT have the parting lines on the seal at the same place that the Main cap & block meet. Once again, THIN coat of silicone on the mating surfaces.

Thanks! - looks like you've got the only wisdom! I hadn't thought of offsetting the two halves of a rubber seal....sounds smart.

Many replace the side seals with "the right stuff". Make sure it is clean...

Amen on the right stuff and clean. When you can eat off it you can then seal it forever.

also might have a one peicer don't know how good they are though. i have been told that a certian size of braizing(sp) wire is good for positioning the seals. And to have lots of patience.

Re: Words of wisdom for rear main seal?
RTG Racing,
Why stay away from Autozone and why do you recomend NAPA? Specifically which brand of seal are you saying to stay away from and which one do you recommend?
Also, I am wanting to verify if all rear main seals are two piece?

Re: Words of wisdom for rear main seal?
Napa has Fel Pro gaskets, I can't say what the zone has...never shop there. Main thing is , get a Quality seal, Fel Pro, or Victor. Considering the PITA it is to do a rear main, why take a chance.

I was planning on using Fel-Pro. I saw a kit for $108 on www.rockauto.com.
