Well after 4 months of sitting in the shop collecting dust, I finally started on the '71 today. I pulled out the very tired, very greasy 360. Tomorrow I will put it on the stand and maybe get an Idea wich direction to go with it.
I looked at a 360 at the salvage today. I just about made up my mind to buy it, I checked the oil and it had about two quarts of extra fluid in the crankcase. oil was kinda grey looking with some gasoline odor. they said it was recently overhauled. I was a little leary of it. It did have a alum. intake and valve covers, and a fresh looking holley carb, not sure what size.
If I was sure it was good I could live with the asking price, $400, but the high oil level kinda scared me away.

ouch...yeah, fuel in the oil can really play havoc with main bearings. If it was just rebuilt and it's got that problem, makes you wonder what OTHER kind of problems it'll have, courtesty of a 'redneck rebuild'. I think I'd pass on that one too.

I rebuilt my motor's and am rebuilding one now and they work fine thank you very much

I got a look at the 360 today. the cylinders are pretty rough. #6 is scored pretty deep. probably will need a sleeve.

I'm tossing ideas around. I've got a 400 with an fmx trans that I've had for a couple of years. I need to start it and see what it sounds like. It's supposed to be a good motor, but it hasn't been started in several years.
The draw back is the mods to make it work. Around $50 to get the driveshaft shortened, probably $75 to get the exhaust tied in. I think the 400 used the same motor stands as the fe.

My grandpa had a 76 F-100 with a 360 and my brothers and me put in a 400/auto. We had to get different perches on the frame. They might work for the engine but it will probably be too high. I had a 69 CC 1/2T and went from a 390 to a 302 without changing the perches. I had lots of trouble with the rear 2 cylinders on each side getting washed down from gas and the front 2 on each side burned valves from running to lean. Also the front bearing on the transmission went out twice from the angle of the motor-trans combo.

I've been checking some salvages for motors. Have yet to find anything that looks very appetizing. I looked at two 460's today. One was stuck. They couldn't start the other one. I know of two yards that are open on sunday, so I may do some more looking tommorow.
I had'nt thought of the height being different on the perches. I can snag a set of 400 perches easy enough though, If I go that route.
I'm hoping to find a good stout 460 with a c6 behind it.

I picked up a doner truck yesterday. '76 model f100 explorer. I'm going to go ahead and do the power steering and disc brake conversion while the motor is out of the '71. Much handier that way. the doner truck has a 302 and a C4 trans that may use on another project one of these days.

Also got a f350 crew cab on the same deal. It is early '80s with a 351w and automatic trans. Not sure wich trans yet
