No pull from the fuel pump.

Post by Darrman »

Tried to start the trucks new 390 today, but am not getting any fuel up to the carb. I have a see thru filter and I got a tiny little bit in it, but nada in the lines. I tried taking it off the tank and dropping it directly in the gas can, still nothing.
I reused the fuel pump because it worked before, and it still looked good. It does not have the filter on the bottom, its a different type, so it cant be plugged.
Anybody have some tricks for testing this thing, before I look at getting a new one? Thanks!

You pretty much got it. Take the outlet off put it into a canister and if you don't get anything out fuel pump is shot. I like the added part of putting the suction line into a gas can to rule out an air leak.

Remove the tank hose under the truck and see if fuel runs down. Ford pumps don't suck they push. Gravity feeds the pump. It is like stealing gas. You suck and then the lower position of the hose end keeps the flow going.

It was a bad pump, got a new one today and it works great.
It is a diaphram pump, pulls from one end and shoves out the other. It does create a vacuum which is what I meant. I tried turning the engine over with my fingers over the holes, you could feel it trying, but very weak
