302 swap

i did some searching but didnt find what i need. so i have a 67 with a 240 I6 just wondering will a 302 bolt into the 240s motor mounts and what else i will need for this swap

I know for sure the I-6 frame mounts won't work. you'll need to find some v-8 frame mounts. are you swaping trannies as well?

It'll physically work, but using FE/I6 stands for a 302 will cause the engine to sit app. 1" too high, altering the driveshaft angle. The best scenario would be to find the proper small-block stands.

However, you could also just shim up the transmission crossmember a similar amount to match the engine stands. Not the ideal solution, but not totally 'ghetto'. ;)

Wow, good info. Going from memory only, I think my truck has I6 stands and the truck had a 289/302 in it when I bought it.

You could also swap a 300 in place of the 240 and have more truck power than a 302 could ever dream of.

so what do you guys think would be the best v8 for a swb bump. i want power but i dont want to spend alot for it

A 300 is an excellent motor. Visit www.fordsix.com for performance advice.

To be honest, a 300 is best for low end torque. They'll not only pull anything but they'll outlast any V8. They're not high revin' horsepower engines but you can build them to be quite impressive.

i found a complete 1981 302 with around 100,000 miles for $150 supposed to run good. but i heard that the 80's engines are smoged down an have less power than 70's engines is this true

if going witha small block why not get a 351w? it is essentially the same swap as 302 and you get a bunch more torque. I have a mild 72 351w making 400 hp. Just a cam, headers, aluminum intake and 4bbl.
80's are definitely down on power from older models.
I may have a set of small block perches if needed. pm me.

I'd agree with going with the 351W if keeping it small. This 400hp, I'd really like to see with just a cam, hedders, and 4V intake. I built a 351C- 4V(closed chamber 4V heads) that had about $3200 worth of parts in it, and it was 330hp at the wheels. I just dont see 400hp happening with W heads, unless they're aftermarket & high flow....I'm not trying to be pi$$y about it though.

Actually, I'm pretty sure a bone stock 1V 300 would walk all over that 302 with a 5000 pound trailer in tow.

For a TRUCK you need a TRUCK engine. A 302 may be a great engine, but I can gaurantee the engineers who made it with it's dinky little 3" stroke and light rotating mass had no intention of putting it in a fullsize truck.

And to the mild 351W making 400HP is that with a 200 shot of nitrous? I have respect for the 351W, it does fairly well for it's size. I've done a lot of wheeling with a brute low end torque one in an early bronco, but even being able to pick the front tires off the ground with a hard 3-2 downshift at 25 MPH I seriously doubt it's making more than 200HP and 300TQ.
