NEW TECH ARTICLE: Fuel Tank Sending Unit Tech
I just posted another another new tech article, this one a basic tutorial on how to troubleshoot a non-functioning fuel gauge. I've outlined how to test a sending unit and have included pictures. The new tutorial is available from the Technical Papers page, or you can CLICK HERE to view the new page. Any input is welcome, including anything that needs to be added or corrected.

I added a picture of the instrument cluster voltage regulator to this page for easier identification.

re: NEW TECH ARTICLE: Fuel Tank Sending Unit Tech
Great article. Have this to add. My truck’s fuel gauge was working somewhat. When the tank was filled, the needle went to the 3/4 mark sometimes and sometimes did not move at all. When the gauge was working, I removed the wire to the main tank and held the wire to ground, the gauge went to full. Bad sending unit! Problem solved, well . . . ! The information did not add up since this problem had been going on for sometime and sometimes the gauge did not work at all after switching between the main and auxiliary tanks. Also, bad sending units in both tanks? After consulting several web sites on fuel gauge issues, two mechanics, and wiring diagram, I decided to look at the main/axillary tank switch. After removing switch, I tested it for continuity - none. After disassembling the toggle switch, cleaning, and carefully putting the thing back together (lost the springs 3 times) - well lubricated with dielectric grease, I tested the switch again. Now, it had continuity. After reinstalling the switch in the truck, and I got readings on both fuel tanks.
