What sling/bar should I buy for my engine hoist for an FE?

Hi!

Recently I got ready to pull the FE engine from my '72 F250 and realized that my engine hoist only has a chain with a single hook on the end. These aren't the best photos because the chain is wrapped around the end of the hoist, but here's what I currently have:

When I think back to the last time my father and I removed this engine, we went to a tool rental place and rented a fancy sling or bar or something. This accessory attached to the single chain and hook on the hoist and had the right provisions for bolting on to the engine in several spots. I can't remember this in more detail because it was over ten years ago.

So what's the recommended gadget to buy to adapt this hoist to my FE engine?

'Evening folks,

When I attached the load leveler to pull out my old FE, I needed to remove the carb' to provide clearance to the chains that went to the head bolts. This seemed kind of awkward.

I spoke with Steve at Proformanceunlimited regarding my 390 they're building, and I asked him if he knew of a hoist attachment that didn't require the removal of the carb' to function.

I heard that they usually use something called a carb' plate. It's a gadget that goes on in place of the carb, then the entire engine is lifted by the intake manifold, using the threads that normally hold the carb' on.

This engine has an aluminum intake manifold.

Doesn't 600lb seem like an excessive weight to lift by those little carb' threads in the aluminum intake? Or do folks really use these carb' plates?

Carb plates work great... for a flat drop in... or when you don't have to lift too high. The yield strength of a single 1/4" bolt is enough to support the whole engine, and you are using 4 x 5/16". The real key is to make sure they are tight and torqued to ~30 Ft lbs. If the bolts/nuts/mount plate is loose and sloppy you can induce side loads the bolts are not intended to deal with.

Personally, I would just lengthen the chains on your sling/tilt bar and give yourself the added maneuverablity that the sling will provide. Especially if you plan on installing the engine with the tranny mounted and the front clip on the truck.

I used a carb plate to pull and install my 390, not a problem.

Darrman and Wes, were you pulling/installing FE's with aluminum intake manifolds? Or cast iron?
