Best Air compressor for body work around $500.00

Post by 69twotone »

Hi all,

I have about 500.00 to spend on a air compressor. I am wondering if I can get one that will run any tool I need to complete the body work on my truck. I need to be able to run a dual action sander, and paint gun. as well as anything else needed to complete the job such as a sandblaster. I would prefer not to add the cost of wiring a 220.

What do you guys reccomend?

I have a Campfield/Hauss 26 gal/5hp---does most everything I want to do
and is run off a 20amp breaker. That was from Wallyworld(with some air tools)for 270$. I would have to say Lowes,Sears,Home Depot, etc will have a decent one in your price range. You might want to consider getting one that will convert to 220(runs more efficant)in the future :2cents:

I bought a new I/R 60 gallon twin piston for 440, but knew the right people. Look for a used unit, they are a better value than new if your only using it hear and there. I would not recomend a direct drive unit, rather get one that requires a belt. Spend some money on a good dryer unit around 100. The standard body shop unit is called a "toilet paper" filter because the filter resembles a roll on tp.

My brother in law found a nice one at Harber Freight for around $400. And it's a 110 but I do agree if you can add 220 line it would save you electric $'s.

If you can do it 220 is the way to go.

I love my Speedaire compressor and if you know someone who works for Grainger you can get one for a great price.

It would have to travel a long distance. I live in a tri-level home and the breaker is in the basement. So it would either have to travel about 80 feet on the outside of the house. Or it would have to travel through the basement ceiling up a wall in the family room through the ceiling and back down a wall.

I agree though I would not figure this to be a big job, I am certainly going to get a couple bids, and see if a friend knows a friend who knows how to do this.

On a side note the electrician told me you can not run a 220 off of another 220. Is this true? There is a dryer 220 in the laundry room about 10 feet from the garage.

I have given thought to hijacking my wifes dryer outlet, but that may cause some fights because of the noise (laundry room is right behind the family room where the main tv is.

You would have to take turns on the use of the outlet--and I don't think thats a "give&take" situation you want  :P . There wouldn't be enough amps to share a 220.
